I chose robbery and directed attack, based upon my assessment of the probability of those things happening while I am out and about. I am 71 with white hair and beard, and I walk with a limp. It is probable that some thug would tragically mistake me for prey. I have carried a firearm every day for 52 years and that's not going to change. To add to my previous comments, and after considering the poll question further, I came to the realization that while I understood that any of the threat options are possible, my answers will change over time, as the threats I face will change over time. Ask me the poll question after I've witnessed or faced violence during a visit to a major city and I'll likely answer Confrontation or Directed Attack. Ask me the question after I've backpacked into a remote area to fly fish, with bear scat on the trail and critters coming into camp at night, and I'll likely answer Animal Attack or Confrontation . Ask me the question after seeing multiple neighborhood cars broken into and contents stolen in a single night and I'll likely answer Robbery and Home Defense. Ask me the question after watching BLM protests take place a mile from my front door, with a portion of the interstate and a neighborhood shut down by rioters and I'll likely answer Confrontation or Directed Attack. Ask me the question again in 5 or 10 years, after I've moved to remote living a few miles outside a small rural town and I'll likely answer... well, ask me then and I'll figure out my answer when that time comes.

Never miss an opportunity to be Batman! |
Not my story but this is a guy who I kept seeing and meeting at various training seminars (empty hand, knife, firearms, medic, survival). The guy was also super nice and great to work with as a training partner or team mate. Well after a firearms class with a very well known instructor, we all went out for dinner. the topic turned to why we we were attending and training. Well this guy (ok, I just going to call him Guy from here on out) finally told his story. Prior to his starting training, he was just an average slightly over-weight/out of shape IT guy, never did self defense or firearms. Well his girlfriend was a bartender and during a city wide power outage, her bar was robbed after it closed, and she was raped and murdered. Guy drove up on the scene as three males ran away, it was too dark for him to identify them. So he ended up finding his girlfriend and another waitress dead. Eventually the police ended up making a DNA case on the suspects and they went to prison. Guy realized if he had arrived earlier, without training, skills, or tools, he wouldn't had been able to save his girlfriend and would have just died watching her being raped and murdered. So he started training, Filipino Martial Arts, Krav Maga, and BJJ (getting in great physical shape), along with firearms, especially "combat" shooting. He got his CCW and started carrying everywhere. He said people that knew him before his girlfriend was murdered, asked him if what happened to her is why he now carries a pistol? Guy said he says, "no......it is why I carry two pistols." After he told his story, none of us, even the instructor could say anything.
