My understand is that setting up a VPN is far more secure when it comes to remotely connecting to ones computer.

I have been port forwarding my camera system using Blue Iris. Well for some reason I can no longer access my Blue Iris server while on a cellular network and the Blue Iris Folks aren't much help.

So maybe it is time to explore setting up a VPN is it overly complicated?

Not too bad to set it up. Regardless of your internet service speeds, it will be a lot slower. Lag times and jitter will be significant. Any errors in your service will drop your VPN regularly. Other than that, it should be great.

I'm not sure if a VPN is what you need to fix your problem. Are you able to access your camera on another wifi/ethernet network (friends/work)?

VPN's offer secure encrypted connections.
However, I don't see it being a beneficial solution for your cameras.
It also comes at an overhead cost (aka slower performance) and can be complicated to configure.
If your camera access is the only solution then troubleshoot that but I don't think a VPN in this case is the answer.

My router supports vpn and have it set up with dynamic dns. Use openvpn on my phone to connect back home. was very easy- what router you have?

AVAST also has it available and it sure would stop a lot of spam.
