Have recently gotten into grilling/smoking on my Primo (USA made Big Green Egg-type) ceramic charcoal grill. Like it. Anyway, want to try the Treager primarily for its low temp smoking prowess. Anyone want to talk me out of it? If so, why?

Have you looked at PK Grill. They are made of aluminum while it's not a pellet unit it's a hell of a smoker/grill. I had a Weber (still do) but bought a PK on a whim. It's great so simple (like your "egg") there's nothing to go wrong or break it just cooks/smokes. Take a look at their site. Link below if it works. Chris

I have both an egg and a Traeger. I was going to get the XL Egg, but the sales guy talked me into just the large Egg AND a 22” Traeger.

His rational was it’s the same price and you can do two things at once if you want. I haven’t used my propane grill since I’ve gotten this set up.

I am very happy with his suggestion. First, I like smoking certain things on each smoker. For example I like pork shoulder on the Traeger and Tri-tips on the egg. I’ve tried things on each and have found my favorites.

Also, if I’m doing a smoke on one with family/friends over, I can still traditional grill on the other one. A burger comes out way better on either the egg or the Traeger vs the propane grill. Once I got used to “grilling” on the smokers, the propane Weber was simply meh for me.

So I can’t talk you out of it man. It’s the only way to go!

I’ve had a Camp Chef pellet grill with propane side grill for over a year now. I started with smoker Pits and had a kamado grill prior to the pellet. I like setting the temp and then leaving it until it’s done but I liked the kamado too. I guess my days of babysitting a grill/smoker are over, I’m pleased with the pellet grill and with the optional propane side grill it does everything I need and makes a great reverse seared steak. I doubt I’ll go back to other grills.

I have a medium Green Mountain Grill that is a Wi-Fi controlled pellet grill. It’s perfect.

Are you talking about cold smoking cheese? You can do that on a Primo. I got a Primo but never have tried cold smoking but have seen folks online doing it.

As far a low temp smoking which I consider around 225 degrees I have no problem getting and holding that temp.

I sold my green egg after having my pellet grill for a year. It’s just so easy to set a temp and forget about it. I will start some ribs or pork butt and go about my day and not worry about any flare ups or temp fluctuations. If you like a heavy smoke taste you will need an aftermarket solution since pellet grills don’t really smoke like a true smoker. Think of it as being as easy as a propane grill with better taste.

My pellet grill can be checked on via my smart phone where I can also set temp alarms for the doneness of the meat which is handy if you are running around on a Saturday. You can actually change the temp from your phone which can be very handy.

10 year Traeger owner here.

I've smoked a metric ton of food on it.

Traeger is over priced and under featured. Get the Green Mtn Grill. Better features for the money.

Or, find a used Traeger and put a Savannah Stoker pid controller on it.

I’ve invested in a Gator Pit pellet smoker. The briskets, pork butts, and everything I’ve smoked so far have exceeded my expectations.

Just make sure you get a good temperature probes. ThermoWorks makes several models to choose from. I’m learning that smoking quality is all about temperature control of both the meat and smoker.

Tomorrow morning wife and I will place a 12ib pork butt on smoke for 13 hours.

It will be great.

Monday, I'll finally chop some of that pork goodness and put it onto a pizza which will wood fired.
