I get it. People want to sign up for social media, kiss it goodbye but what about the rest of us who didn't ask to be tracked and recorded?

I found out this year that vehicle inspection stickers now have sensors in it for police cars to pull a profile on vehicles that pass by. Now I see this:

quote:
What if you could install one product on a patrol car that provided capability for automatic license plate recognition, facial recognition, and speed and parking violation detection? Billed as the first and only smart patrol in the world, Ekin's Patrol G2 is designed to do just that, in the form of a fully functioning lightbar.

I'm sorry but there's no need for this kind of technology. There is no organization, government or private, who needs or should have the ability to scan my face to know who I am and where I am at any time.

I'm not a criminal. I don't have anything to "worry" about. I believe Americans have the right to move freely in a country without anyone tracking us, least of all in the name of "safety."

I'm well aware of computers/smartphones being used as listening devices, GPS tracking and all that and it's unacceptable, just like this.

How long before they do away with cash so they can track every penny of our financial activity?

We have never had the right to privacy. There is probably someone going through your underwear drawer right now. Public space is just that, act like big brother is watching, because he is.

Interesting this comes up, I'm at the Costco Pharmacy to pick up a couple of scripts, behind me is a couple, he's leaning on a cart, she's speaking some foreign language on a cell phone. No big deal about that except when you get up to the register there is about a 5 or 6 foot buffer zone that waiting customers are not to enter until you are the one being served,

Nice big sign, giant red pole with same sign, and a black display sign with WAIT HERE! Sign is : Due to Privacy of our Customers please remain behind this line/Post until called.

Simple, clear, bright red letter on white, and in triplicate.

So Ms. Yackaty Yack just walks right up behind me in line as I"m signing disclosures, the guys asking for DOB, Name etc yacking on her cell and clearly past the privacy line. So I turn around and look at her, get the What look and actually had to say, "you know that you are supposed to wait behind that pole, it's a privacy issue and this is a private transaction and there is the line of which you are not to cross when a customer is up her getting their medications." Of course Ms Ahso Indignant stated huffly " Well I'm sorry (she wasn't) and that she didn't see it, to whit " Yes I am aware you didn't see it considering you are standing beside me, that's why I brought it to your attention" She did move,

I half way wanted to turn and say "you know I"m infectious with a serious skin disease that anyone can get if you are within 5 feet of me, you might want to see your doctor since you were too ignorant to observe the privacy rules"

I would suggest that there is no right to privacy but I think it should be obvious that we should not accept the fact that as soon as we go outside, we're under active surveillance

I think thats an abomination and needs to be stopped

Funny you should mention this, I was just thinking about it, and Walmart specifically.

I've noticed that Walmart has a lot of new security cameras, not the ones they've had for years, up hanging from the ceiling, these are new.

Now they've got cameras hanging 8 to 10 feet up above the floor, some attached to shelf supports, and probably more I haven't even noticed yet.

The amazing thing is that they're motion activated and a light comes on to shine on your face and the display clearly shows your face. You'll especially notice these in cosmetics, the razor blade area, and more.

I get it, I understand they're battling shoplifters all the time.

Now go to the check out lane and find out that you're just about forced to use the self checkout machines. You're on camera, right in your face, as you ring up and sack your stuff.

Well, so what's your point, Gene?

As I was swiping my credit card (or debit card), it struck me that BOOM! now Walmart has your name correlated and recorded to your financial identification. Write a check and they scan it through? Now Walmart has your address, phone number, etc, and your pic.

Think of the implications of that. I'll just about bet that Walmart is using facial recognition software. They now have your name and ID attached to your pic.

Oh look! We see that Gene buys ammo! He buys lots of whatever. Now we know what time he usually comes in. What an advance in data mining.

Would they be selling this data? Who knows.

I think we have at least one member here working Walmart loss prevention. I really doubt this person will respond to this thread, can't blame that person for risking the job.

I'm glad that you mentioned that, I never thought about it.

I print my own checks. I'm going to start printing them with ONLY my name. No address.

As for the incident in the pharmacy, that sign asking you to “stop here” is probably nothing more than the pharmacy’s way around HIPPA. Do they care? Probably not, but they have to make some show of complying with keeping your medical records private.

Whew - agree with the OP, for a moment I thought you were going to get upset over the 500 million phone calls the NSA recorded.

opps, recorded in 2017 I see:

As far as a "public right to privacy" goes, maybe you don't feel the need to be secure from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government, but I'd feel invaded if there was an officer right outside my home who shadowed me all day as soon as I left the home and got into the public space, that's pretty much what is happening except on a grander scale.

I would not worry too much about the high tech lightbar. Most departments wont be able to afford it. Just about everything in a police budget is subject to "low bid" purchasing.
As I was rocketing to my next call, I always thought I was now driving the low bid.
Comforting!
