Just for the hell of it |
I have an iPhone and Macbook. I always can text other with an iPhone through my computer when I'm using it. Same as texting on my phone with how Apple integrates things. Earlier today it started asking me to sign in again with my Apple ID when I tried to text someone. Every time I do this I get a message "Could not sign in to iMessage." "An error occurred during activation. Try again." The password is correct. I even logged into iCloud on a private browser window to make sure my password was correct. I can sign into iCloud with no issues. Everything else that uses my Apple ID seems to be OK just iMessage on my Macbook _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. This happens on my MBP. I haven’t really dug in to trying to solve it. RB Cancer fighter (Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma) since 2009, now fighting Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma.

It's probably the 2-factor authentication that Apple has been strongly mandating. You'll have to generate a six-digit verification code from one of your trusted devices, then append it to your regular password. I think you have only 30 seconds to do this. Two-factor authentication for Apple ID

I know the two-factor authentication. Used it before. When I logged in to iCloud earlier it did it again and sent to code to my phone. If that's the problem it's not prompting me to use the 2-factor authentication for this. Not sure how to make that happen if it's the issue. In the past, it asks and sends me a code automatically. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Not sure I understand. OK, so you try to log onto iCloud, and it automatically sends your iPhone the six-digit code. You then re-attempt the login, appending that code to your regular password? I don't think you will be asked for it, just do it and your MacBook should be permanently authorized. It is confusing because in the past Apple used two-step verification, and now uses two-factor authentication.

I have no issue with iCloud. I was testing my password to make sure it was correct with iCloud. Problem is with iMessage on my MacBook which until today worked fine. Not sure what stopped it from working. It now asks for my apple password. When I enter the password I get the error message in my first post. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Are you entering the password with the auth code?

Just password. I get no option for any other code. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain. Jack Kerouac

It tells me my iMessage account is not signed in. When I hit OK it asks for my password. After I enter my password I get the An error occurred during authentication. Ah-ha. You have to append the 6-digit code directly to your regular password. For example, if your password is Password, and the code is 123456, you would enter Password123456. It's kind of bizarre, but that's how you do it. Also realize the code has an incredibly short time limit, like 30 secs, so you might need to have the entry screen on your MB all ready to go once the code flashes on your iPhone. Try it and let us know how it goes.

How do I get the code? Never had to add it to my password before. Just today when I logged into iCloud to make sure I had the correct password it did the two-part thing. Not the way you are describing it but the way I have always seen Apple do it. It asks for the code at the same time it sends a message to my phone asking if I wanted a login for such and such. When I say it's ok on my phone it gives me the code on my phone that I then enter on my computer, not amended to my password. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. They are using a new system now. You're used to the old 2-step method; now it's 1-step with two factors. To get the code on your trusted device (iPhone): Settings/Apple ID/Password & Security/Get Verification Code. Again, you'll have 30 seconds to enter the code appended to your regular password on your MacBook.

Ignored facts still exist |
By the way, I have the exact same problem on my ipad. My issue is with FaceTime as well. I can't figure it out, and it's driving me crazy. .

Sounds like the same problem. Generate an auth code on your iPhone (assuming you have an iPhone), then add the 6-digit string to your regular password for Facetime on your iPad.

Well then, sign into your iMessage account. I don't know how it got logged out, but try Messages -> Preferences -> Accounts and select Enable Account. It should look something like this: (The Enable Messages in iCloud setting shouldn't matter for this problem.)
Your's isn't a two factor authentication problem. It could be related to Apple pushing out iOS 12.1.3 which apparently addresses the FaceTime bug.

Thanks for all the replies. This morning I restarted my MacBook and iMessage automatically logged in and started working again. Still, don't know what caused it to log me out and not let me log back in. rh I'm still running 12.1.2 on my iPhone. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn.
