Okay so the new RAV4 has a "Map" button on the display.

When I press it, it says "Not installed, go to the Toyota website".

I rummaged around a bit there but didn't find anything that looked applicable.

Is this something I can do myself with a download and I'm just too stupid to find the link?

Easier to have the dealer install it?

Fees involved?

My 2018 4Runner has an SD card that loads the nav/map.
Maybe the card is missing...?

You may have to use the the scout app dowoaded to your phone, depending on the headunit you got.

I can use the Google Maps app on my phone, but it has to be physically connected via a USB cable which is what confused me.

I suspect the Integrated Nav App would be fee-based.

Maybe to upgrade the maps of the older card-based headunits, but I don’t believe there is any Toyota fee-based Nav service.

And honestly, the Entune Nav system absolutely sucks compared to Google Maps/Waze.
I never use mine, and when I do, it’s to see how far off it is from Waze.

What really sucks is you can’t retrofit the software to have it use Apple CarPlay.
But, of course, it’s in the ‘19 4Runners...

Speaking of Apple carplay navigation...my Ranger has easy install for android nav setup. I began the download and it had a bunch of responds I didn't want to answer "yes" but it wouldn't continue otherwise.

So far I've got the phone bluetooth working, yet haven't solved the Big Yes to everything.

You're not missing anything with the Toyota nav system. Toyota is finally implementing Apple Carplay, slowly.

2019 forerunner had very basic maps.

Have to upgrade for better maps with more known locations, etc.

I find the dash app aggravating as you have to be stopped in order to do anything. So my passenger can’t even operate it.

I just use my phone.

It’s likely that all of the RAV4s use a common head unit with a map button, but whether you actually have the nav system depends on whether it’s actually installed, either as software or a SD card with the actual maps. Did you buy the RAV4 with the navigation package, or a trim level that came with navigation? If not, then best bet is to ask on a Toyota forum (or search) on how to add it. I know on Mazda CX-5s, you can just buy the SD card with the maps and plug it in.

Can't speak to the RAV4 nav system, but in the Tacomas, it's a feature you pay for (usually in a tech package) when the vehicle is purchased new. I don't know if the SD card actually carries the nav system but I know it's used to update the maps as they become out of date. As I recall the SD card update is around $50 from Toyota, and there are less expensive aftermarket (Ebay et al) available. So I guess you need to check if nav was included in the purchase.

As to how good Toyota's nav system is; I find it adequate. It's never lead me down a dead end road or such and it seems the routes it selects are fine for the most part. Traffic alerts work in metro areas, but not so much the further you get from cities. If your RAV4 has Apple Play and/or Android Auto, you can always use that to get to those nav apps although I'm pretty sure you need to connect your phone with a cord. No bluetooth.
