As Extraordinary as Everyone Else |
I’m assuming that we’re talking about a yet to be built garage. In our custom homes we’ve always preferred 2 (or 3) single doors and given the size of modern vehicles the doors were usually 10 feet wide by 8 feet tall IF you have the room. Typically you’ll need 2 addition feet above the garage door for the runners etc. so that means at least a 10 foot plate height. Also, have at least 2 feet between the doors and for god’s sake make sure your electrician installs an outlet either inside or outside between the doors. Also be sure to get insulated doors with at least an R-6 rating. It’s amazing how much nicer your garage will be with some insulated doors. While we’re at it…get your builder to insulate the walls and ceiling too. R-19 will probably be enough in the ceiling unless you have plans to install an hvac system as well. ------------------ Eddie Our Founding Fathers were men who understood that the right thing is not necessarily the written thing. -kkina

This is a 16'x9' in a 24' wide post frame garage. I often park a Ridgeline next to a Sienna van and there is plenty of room as long as you pull in a couple of feet and angle over a little. I've got the wall mount opener and 5 years use w/ no problems. ________________________ God spelled backwards is dog

I added an attached garage to my house about 15 years ago 20x24 ft. The garage door is a 16’ door. I have regretted many times since then that did not put a 18’ door or two single doors. Yes our two SUV’s fit but we end up driving in with a little angle. It would be much nicer to just drive straight in and have plenty of room to open the doors. My advice don’t get the 16’.

TBH raises an excellent point about heating/cooling efficiency concerns. Sourcing something outside of a standard size will cost more and can cause delays. With that stated...I can't think of a single instance where too tall of a door was regretted. Only the opposite. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The trouble with our Liberal friends...is not that they're ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so." I have a double garage with a single door. The garage itself is 20x20 giving me 400 sq. ft. of parking area and storage. I pretty much have everything off the floor and hung on the wall with the Rubbermaid FastTrack system. My garage door opener is a belt-drive Chamberlain that is quieter than the chain drive system I replaced. I had a garage door company come out and lube/adjust the door and opener a year or so ago. It had an OEM single spring and the tech suggested he replace it with a double spring to equalize the torque across the entire door; the cost was VERY minimal. "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. Thanks guys. Some great points and I cannot disagree with any of the points made. This house is a 1500 sq. ft single level with 24wx 28d garage. The garage will have a 4x12' mechanical room in it. The foundation is poured. It was done with and opening for a 16' door. The builder is doing 9' walls and say's no problem doing an 8' door with opener. Sounds like some of you will disagree but will trust his opinion on it. This home will be for and elderly family member with one vehicle. It will probably have a second vehicle of mine in it. I would of preferred an 18' door but not my final decision. At some point a shop could be built with more vehicle storage. Until such a time this will work just fine.
