Taskandpurpose.com: Navy aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and merchant vessel collide near Egypt

The aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and the merchant vessel Besiktas-M collided about 11:46 p.m. on Wednesday in the Mediterranean Sea, Navy Cmdr. Timothy Gorman, a Navy 6th Fleet spokesman, announced.

Both ships were operating near Port Said, Egypt, at the time, Gorman said in a brief news release.

“The collision did not endanger the Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as there are no reports of flooding or injuries,” Gorman said. “The propulsion plants are unaffected and in a safe and stable condition. The incident is under investigation. More information will be released as it becomes available.”

For most other vessels, that must have been like 'colliding' with Staten Island.

Seems the old days of senior officer accountability in the Navy are over. As result, accountability down the line may be absent as line.

Beyond comprehension how events could unfold such that a US surface ship let alone a carrier can run into another ship as big as a cargo ship.

So much for the billions we spend on personnel and equipment to protect that carrier, when someone can just sail freighter right into it.

How in the hell does another ship even get close enough to hit an aircraft carrier?

You’re assuming the aircraft carrier didn’t run into the ship.

How the hell does a merchant vessel moving a measly 12 knots get between an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and the aircraft carrier its escorting?

If you view the video, it was near the entrance of the Suez Canal. The bulk carrier was exiting the canal and the Truman was entering. As the video shows, there are many, many ships in that area waiting to enter or just leaving the canal. The single escort keeping other ships away isn’t possible in this area. This isn’t a case a ship penetrating the escort screen. It’s large ships maneuvering in a congested area.

Same. It’s nuts, and an embarrassment to our vets and fallen soldiers. But at the same time we don’t know the details. Have to remind myself to hold judgement until all facts are known. But yeah, given recent “events” it’s enough already.

I understand it was in a congested area, but after the Cole you would think they would not let anyone near, that freighter could have had a lot of dangerous stuff on board.

Navy ships colliding is not unheard of though history. I understand in canal and port areas carriers are closer to other ships than normal but I do wonder how the two got that close.
