Unreal. What in the world was he thinking? Those poor people were very fortunate on the boat.

The crash in Canada, a result of what authorities say was a mechanical issue, which, considering the video, was likely the RV losing its brakes. The video shows the RV careening down the hill toward the ferry that's already pulled away from the shore, hit the launch ramp, fly through the air, and come crashing down onto the deck of the ferry. It appears the RV hits tall metal structure on the back of the boat, before crashing down onto the deck.

Sadly, the driver, 40-year-old Eric Belec succumbed to his injuries, according to Global News, while his 40-year-old female passenger remained in critical condition as of earlier this week. What’s shocking about the video is watching the RV’s cab collapse into a heap of debris. While any car crash as extreme as this one would likely result in any number of catastrophic results, the ferocity of devastation from the RV crash is downright shocking and disturbing.

He was thinking, "Damn, I really need to make this ferry!"

Lost his brakes? Correct me if I'm wrong but, short of sabotage, isn't it almost impossible for a modern vehicle to completely lose it's brakes?

I have ridden that ferry, in 2005. Here's a picture of my car (the red Mustang) on the deck:

It's a free ferry run by the government and there are 3 boats making the rounds--wait is about 15-20 minutes during the day. It's an important facility--the nearest bridge across the Saguenay River is about an hour upriver.

Wow, that was a really good time to be aware of your surroundings. I've seen people lost in their devices who would not have noticed a two ton vehicle about to drop upon them.

Sorry the guy didn't make it. Can't imagine that vehicle passing a crash test.

Completely loose them likely so but loose them enough not to stop something that large nope quickly or even slow one down much on a down hill not out of the realm of possibilities.
I had the brake booster and master cylinder go out in my 2016 Expedition fortunately I was in a neighborhood. Had I been driving on the highway, mountain roads, or a ramp like that I would have had serious problems.

As I recall, passengers were not supposed to be on the car deck while the boat was in motion. I'm surprised there were any there other than crew.

Last time I was on a ferry, folks were walking around everywhere, while the thing was going. Confused

I wonder if there was a stuck throttle or accelerator pedal. Given the wall/ramp, height, and disttance, I believe acceleration was occurring.

Is there an incredibly steep hill leading up to this ferry? I just can't imagine the RV carrying enough energy to launch like that without being under full power.

If the RV did indeed lose its brakes - the driver probably thought he was going to be launching it safely into the water - not realizing the ferry was still close to the dock.
