17.3 inch screen

Why do all these things look like half-ass skateboards? They have neon lights and "rad" design. Shit, I just want to circulate a little bit of air.

Been using it for a number of years now. One thing that's important is that I'll take it apart once every few months and really get a good cleaning with the shop vac.

I have the same one! I can't see the lights when the laptop is on it unless I'm in the dark.

I've had this one for about 18 months. I use it all the time at home. For about a year, I always plugged it into a USB port and had the fans going, but it was causing batteries to run down faster. The last 6 months I've been using it unpowered as it improves heat transfer by both the mesh surfaces and having an inch gap between the table or my lap.

I should also add that unless I really need it, I keep the backlight on the keyboard off. Seems to keep the laptop cooler.

I have the same as Edmond,going strong after 10 months on my 17".

I don't have a cooling pad but a wedge made of plastic that lifts the laptop at an angle allowing the hot raise instead of being trapped. I found this on Amazon similar to what I have.

After researching this topic some months ago I went with the Opolar vacuum-type cooler:

I also bought an Ergostand III just in case the Opolar wasn't up to snuff but found that the little vacuum cooler did a better job at cooling the cpu. I use the program Speccy to keep an eye on the cpu temperature. At lower speeds the Opolar isn't too intrusive, but at speeds above 10 the noise can become tiresome. For $30 it does a good job of cooling and is a lot more portable than a cooling pad.

Also, I tried both the cooling pad and vacuum cooler together to see how cool I could get things and had the same result as this guy:

Another user of this one. Mrs. M-11 has been using it at least 6 hrs a day Mon-Fri and 10 hr/day weekends for the past year. Still runnin' & hummin'..

I don’t have a cooling pad, but I’ve always set my laptop on a 7/8” thick wooden cutting board with rounded edges and corners. I never feel any warmth through it. It’s rigid, so the short “leg” bumps on the bottom of the laptop create a small insulating air gap.

That cutting board saved me from a nasty burn twelve years ago when the battery in my laptop burst into violent flame. And gave me a way to carry the burning beast to my bathtub. Total loss, but Apple replaced it for free.
