I could use some help finding an affordable pair of active noise cancelling headphones to use on airplanes. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but anything over $75 seems way beyond my needs. I'm not too picky about sound quality as long as they work and don't fall apart.

I picked these up a few years ago and they do the job of cancelling out engine noise and other noises on the plane.
Sony
They are lower end, and they lack padding on the headband, which starts to wear on my dome towards the middle of my trans-Atlantic flights, but they do the job and I’m happy with my purchase. I just can’t bring myself to spend hundreds of dollars for the high-end models from other manufacturers. I think for $20 more the next model up has some padding.

If you fly more than 6 times a year, just pony up for some good ears.

I prefer earbuds and the Bose noise cancelling have been great. The $225 I spent on them 4+ years ago has been money well spent across the 200 plus flights I’ve been on.

I have been using these. They are OK. Comfortable and the noise cancelling seems decent. I can ride the mower and still hear music at a reasonable level.

The only thing I don't like is the active noise cancelling does strange things to my ears if the headphones are not playing anything.

If you plan on using them more than once a year, spend the money. If your budget is $75, I don't think you're going to get much in the way of function, reliability, or quality.

My personal favorite thus far has been the Sennheiser HD1 (previously named the Momentum). They're lightweight, which was paramount for me for long use sessions. I had the Bose 35s but sold them because they were too quiet - I couldn't hear anything around me which caused me to almost miss a flight last year as I didn't hear the gate change announcement. The Senns quiet your environment such that everything sounds like it's far away. And despite the fact they're Bluetooth, they've been pretty durable.

I considered a lower-end set of over-the-ear headphones for our trip. In retrospect: Maybe I should have gone for it. I've a decent set of earbuds, but the cabin noise is so great I had to turn the sound up louder than what is good for what remains of my hearing.

I think before the next trip I'm going to find a set. Probably try to find an acceptable set that does both Bluetooth (for my mobile devices) and wired (for the plane's system).

I'm not spending $200, $300 or more for them, that's for damn sure. I suppose if you fly a lot perhaps it'd make sense. Not for me.

If you have regular in the ear headphones on a flight, you can barely hear music / movies.

Honestly you don’t realize how loud it is in a plane until you have noise cancelling headphones / earbuds.

I get it, if you only fly a handful of times a year, not more than 2-3 hours a leg, it may not be worth it. But if you fly more or longer than that, it’s unbelievabley worth.

Additional benefit - have a crying baby on your flight? You don’t hear it. Somebody talking loud or snoring? You don’t hear it.

Sure it wont protect you from the morbidly obese dude’s gut spilling in from the seat next to you or eliminate his stench, but there are other methods of avoiding that.

I only fly once or twice a year, so I'm not sure I'd get good value spending $200+ on them.

I spent $40 for these years ago and they weren't perfect, but they mostly cut out the noise.

@ensigmatic

if you have a set of wired headphones, you could get a bluetooth receiver/transmitter like the following, only downside is battery life rated to 6 hours on receive mode but you could get a portable battery pack for it.

I just bought one because I just upgraded to an iPhone 8 and couldn't use my wired earbuds.

To me it's a math problem.

I have over 1000 hours of time with my Bose QC-20 noise cancelling earbuds, likely more when you consider non-airline use. They cost $250 with tax - so it's like a quarter an hour of use for me (conservatively).

For work calls, they are great to put on while working because you don't hear anyone else, just the person talking to you. While chilling in the hotel room, you don't hear the kids running around or the maid vacuuming the hall.

It just depends what you are looking for and want to spend. But if mine were lost today, I'd buy a replacement before my next trip, without a second of hesitation. They are that good.

I have a set of Bose quietcomfort 30 earbuds that are definietly not cheap, but I highly recommend them. I use them daily, so to me the money is worth it.

I also have a pair of Audio Technica noise cancelling headphones that I used a lot for two years. They are about $100 and worked really well on planes. You can listen to whatever at a reasonable volume. Not as good as the bose, but for a third of the price, you get about 80% of the noise cancelling ability. I used them a a lot and they started to degrade and the foam on the ear pieces started to fall apart, but my wife's are still in good condition and she only really uses them for flying.

Audio Technica

I bought those for my wife and I. We fly less than once per year and they were worth it, especially for her. So it's not like I'm imagining things.

^^^^^ What he said. My head phones have become part of my daily uniform. At work, I only use them for phone calls, but the sound is so much better and it allows me to use both hands while talking. At home, I'm wearing them while I'm doing pretty much any chores. I use them for TV a bunch (via Roku) since my wife likes to read, and I can watch TV without disturbing her.

The only downside to a nice pair of noise cancelling headphones is that they do their job very well. My wife has to practically scream to get my attention if I've got them on.

Wow. Those look pretty good. Heck, I may pop for a pair now, and don't even know when or if I'll be needing them.

I think for your uses you made the right choice. So you would suggest the earbuds vs the standard headphones at that price level?

Are these the same pair? I ask because if there is a problem I can return them a lot easier to Amazon.

They appear to be the same to me. I love mine. I use a $1000 set of Sennheisers when I'm at work and I think these are their equals when it comes to noise cancelling and music.

I think the earbuds are the way to go. They are more comfortable to wear for long periods of time, your ears don't get hot, they don't interfere with wearing glasses, and I think that the noise cancelling is noticeably better. The one plus I'll give to the on-ear/over-ear headphones is that the sound quality is a little better.

Hmmm... Buy 'em now, when needing them will be a year off, or wait until I need them, only to find they're either no longer available or have taken a quality hit?

Decisions, decisions...
