Got a nice shade tree going. Maybe 5" and 20' tall with nice canopy. About a month ago leaves started to dry up and begin to fall off. Not change color. Hmmm. A dead maple tree I guess. Now I look at it and it looks like it set buds and now they are starting to green up and open new leaves? What i is going on with this thing.

This is not at my home so do not get to assess it very often. Does not get water. Or a very occasional soaking. Dry summer climate with good soils. Neighboring property has maples that never get water. Not sure what is going on.

Any thoughts, any arborists.

Give it a drink. Wait till next year before cutting down. It'll probably come back.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

It's stressed...

It drops the leaves due to drought...but its still sapping...so will strive to get new ones out to try to save itself.

Kinda like grass that goes dormant when it gets hot...but then grows again when watered or in cooler weather.

I'd water it through September until you get into cooler fall weather.

Try to let it get those leaves out before full-fall.

Send a photo with explanation to the County Agent. They always know the issue.

Stress and drought. I am experiencing the same thing in NH. Lots of premature leaves on the ground.

Wait and see how cooler evenings in September and October factor in.

We deep water our maple. It's probably a water issue.

Now if it were yellowing, which yours isn't, it's a potassium problem in the soil.

I have a pretty big Japanese Maple (I think) and it does it every year around this time.
Doing it as we speak.
