I just recently got onto FB for just that reason. But I agree with the above complaints re AI, etc.

What surprises me are the unfounded stories that border on slander/libel. Some notable figure has been exposed for some crime, yet it's nowhere else in the news. Odd that they get away with that.

All? That's an interesting take from someone with nearly 10k posts on this social media website... Wink

The wife dropped her Facebook account about six months ago. The exact same reasons you cited. I would go on there once in a while to see what a few friends were doing, they all have pretty much bailed out as well.

The advertising and AI crap is unbelievable. She has never regretted a day since she left.

I want to set up a facebook account and use it ONLY for the classifieds, (woodworking tools and downsizing household things, etc).

Can I connect thru a VPN, use a fake name, birth date, etc? Or will FB figure out its fake and block me? I've thought about buying a "burner" phone just for this. Good idea or waste of money? I want to stay as anonymous as possible.

I use marketplace, generally scan daily and have bought and sold several cars. I've been playing with cars since mid 70s buying and selling for walking money and fun. I'm a trader,it's in my blood I guess. Marketplace rules, craigslist is basically defunct and newspaper classifieds died about 20 years ago.

Also useful to scope out menus as most restaurants have a website on FB. Effective way to market if you are diligent.

I've browsed fb and as most have said just garbage ai slop and click bait, also full of scam ads that mimic real thing selling name brand goods at almost too good to be true-scams, all scams. Keep your guard up.

I sold a motorcycle for a friend in a rehab home on marketplace,

took 6 months,

had one guy look and I accepted his offer, never came back, called etc to pick it up,

had tons of BS questions,
one guy said I was selling it illegally, since it was not in my name, (he shut up when I said I could meet him at the rehab home and he could have the guysign the title there, )

also tried to buy some gravel from a local company advertising driveway gravel and spreading, they never bothered to reply

a friend uses it a lot to sell bikes he refurbs, and says for the most part it is hassle free for him,

What were you thinking? Is it old age? I called a woman Sue the Thursday morning, I know her name is Kim. So now tomorrow morning I have to apologize to her, just to let her know that I am not stroking out.

Setup a FB only email, you could get a google phone nummber and use their app on your phone for the burner line if you dont' want to use your phone.

Both forms of communication need to remain open for you to get notifications, log in, etc.

The AI crap is unavoidable but there is good stuff out there too.

I get the SF and other BB formats are "social media" in the sense of the use of the term here, that's FB, Instagram, X, Parler, Rumble, TruthSocial, TikTok..... places were AI, Influencers, advertisers gather are more in the SM category.

While it's social SF is not media based with zero ads, influencers etc.

I like to use Facebook Marketplace occasionally.
I've sold a motorcycle, ATV, mower deck, and a Subaru in the last 4 to 5 years.
I set up a secondary "burner" gmail email address on my phone, and used that to "register" on Facebook.
I also have the Facebook Messenger app on my phone for Marketplace communications.
Just don't use the Messenger app for anything else, other than Marketplace communications.

The system works great, with success in selling and buying.
The email address you signed up with, will get bombarded with emails from Facebook about connecting with people you may know, meet single women, buy this or that.
The emails have an "unsubscribe" button at the bottom of the email, and that feature works very well.
So you don't have to do a damn thing "ON" Facebook, except use Marketplace for your benefit.
