Amazon photo storage is free for Amazon Prime subscribers.
Can that be used for hosting pics to post here?
Don't know. I haven't tried. If you're a Prime member, give it a try (won't cost you anything, it's free) and report back to us.
I just use it to offload photos from my iPhone. I can see the photos with the app from any iThing.

HRKJust tell your MIL that it's going to be a shame if all her photos of the grandkids go poof since she doesn't have iCloud backup installed... Once you convince her, he will come around, nothing like the power of a grandmother over her family pictures.... LOL

AeteoclesI don't mind paying for the iCloud. They're happy to use my other subscription services when offered (Netflix, Office365, etc).
Trapper is right though, he didn't ask for a solution.
If I'm being honest, I'm less concerned about them losing their contacts/settings as I am about losing pictures of my daughter (or not ever getting them).
I floated the idea to my wife of getting her a new iPad, making that iPad part of the Grandma + Grandpa + Mommy family ecosystem and then buying iCloud as a family subscription. Then Grandma can iCloud up her phone and Grandpa can stay old-school with his.
Anyone intimately familiar with Apple ID/iCloud accounts? Is there any risk of losing user data for either Grandma or Grandpa for the plan outlined above? I would like to avoid the "i told you so" talk. lol.

It is pictures of the grandkids, not the launch codes. Not even your bank account data. Who the fuck cares? Don't keep anything on the cloud that is genuinely sensitive and it doesn't matter.
But convincing old people to use technology? Let me know if you figure it out. My mom still drives to the bank to deposit a $40 check.

hrcjonI can tell you this story. I backup my iphone to both icloud and my PC. Recently my Iphone decided to crap on itself and self destruct. The new phone arrived quickly and it simply would not do a restore from the PC due to some issues on different IOS versions. The PC backup was newer so I was trying to use it, it Couldn't be done despite long hours on tech support with apple. So I let the icloud restore run its merry way and all was good in a couple of hours. You can't have too many backup strategies and I wouldn't own an iphone without icloud.

trapper189Could you use AirDrop to transfer a copy of the photos from their phones to yours or your wife’s phone? Is he opposed to emailing the photos to you?

AeteoclesTrapper. You are brilliant.
Email won't work, file size and quantity would be cumbersome.
But, if I got a new iPad, they could airdrop to their hearts content to the iPad, and then I will just have the iPad backed to the cloud and link albums to myself.

Or just pay for iCloud on their phones and set them up for auto backup.

AeteoclesYeah, but grandpa doesn't want to rely on auto backup. His phone, not mine. I've offered to do it for them. And pay for it. They're already using my cell phone plan.
Setting up "my" iPad to auto backup gets around having to do anything to "their" phones.
They can just airdrop photos to the iPad at their leisure (or, realistically, at my prompting)
