Apparently he was asked to "try out" for his Battalion/Gdud (202nd) sniper team and he was one of two selected. I suspect he was also looking for a lighter weapon than the FN mag!
He started joint sniper school a few weeks ago and had to sign up for 8 more months of active service (3 months into 20 months total; after a year of basic/language training and infantry training) in the IDF Paratroopers. 18 of 20 snipers in training are from the IDF's super-elite units. Talk about badasses.

Love the distinctive IDF jump boots. Just as cool as the US paras' iconic Corcorans from back in the day, and a way better emblem for a specialized unit than a patch, badge, or beret color, IMO.
