Generational family food traditions definitely makes the bonds stronger, who doesn't like good homemade food? It's noticeable. Everybody pitches in, everybody recognizes the importance of the process and it helps provide identity for both the younger generation and, the oldest generation as they see the world accelerate past them. The Southern European cultures may lack in financial discipline but, they more than make up for it with their family food culture. No secret why Italy and Spain are top-3 travel destinations for Americans...we want what they got.

As my sister and her b/f's kids get older, they're starting to recognize what an actual functioning family looks like and acts like; whereas on the mother's side, the kids are either coddled and talked down to or, shuffled-off to the 'kids table' or, 'kids room'.

When I was a child, my folks always had a garden (we lived in Detroit) and they raised tomatos along with other things. Mom prepared the tomatos and put them into a conical colander that had a big round wooden roller. It was my job to squish all the juice out of the tomatos. She canned the juice, which was later used as the base for chili and spaghetti sauce; we also drank it undiluted. It was wonderful!

I'm surprised they don't actually "process" them or "can" them using a steam canner. They just put the hot sauce into jars and screw the lids on and let them sit.

Very interesting.....

When I was in college I used to make a gallon or so of sauce and basically do it the same way as the video (my mom's side of the family is Italian). A few years later I learned you had to be careful canning tomato based foods due to botulism. I stopped after that since I didn't have the time nor energy to do it "right".
