So.. was that narration a confirmation that this is state owned? Or just rumored to be? What would NY state be doing allowing itself to discretely compete in private business?

It does not sound like it would even pass the state regulations for ventilation.

Why don't you email them and ask? I'm certain they'll be delighted to help.

"Any time the government owns something and there is no competition, it sucks"

She could not have stated that any better.

As proof, I will submit the ABC Stores here in North Carolina...

that is quite bizarre ... I suspect it is not the 'owner' but some young computer idiot troll that is playing with folks.

It's a county owned range. It exists is about the best thing you can say about it, because there are VERY few alternatives for shooters.

It's got kind of a 60's prison vibe. lol Lots of odd rules, dank and dirty, limited hours in the summertime because of the unbearable heat inside.

If it really is an employee, I don't think there are many options for who it could be. I do know one employee was fairly active (and helpful) om local shooting forums.

The online post was probably someone being sarcastic, but I do believe 100% that's how the county feels about the facility.

I have shooting friends that were in a club that shot there every couple weeks. It was a bit of a haul for me, but a few times a year I would go just to hang out and see everyone. I'm glad I don't have to use the facility.

It's true.

Slightly off-topic, but related:
We used to belong to a private pool. It was an awesome place to socialize with our friends and all of our kids were on swim team.

The municipalities and the county started building "community centers" with swimming pools. You can't compete against the government. It put our private pool out of business. The land was sold and it became yet another subdivision.

The county pools suck.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
