For those of you in Rio Linda, Scott County is on the Mississippi River, biggest city and county seat is Davenport. Just across the river are Rock Island & Moline IL. The Rev. Jay Wolin said there is no requirement to cooperate with ICE and no one should be deported for a misdemeanor offense. "We wanted to come together and let them know what our values are," Wolin said. "This is a moral issue, let alone a legal issue, on how we treat people." Boo hoo. I know where you can find sympathy. Maria Concepcion Hernandez Calderon was arrested Wednesday afternoon for shoplifting and held at Scott County Jail, following the placement of an immigration hold. Sheriff Tim Lane said Calderon was no longer at the jail because ICE took the woman into custody and was headed to the Linn County Correctional Center. Calderon was released to her family according to a post on the Facebook page of Quad-Cities Interfaith. Scott County Jail has had a contract with ICE for years to hold detainees. Earlier this year, Lane said the contract was renewed. "We are in a contract with ICE where we do hold ICE detainees for up to seven days," Lane said. "They are not our inmates. They are their's and they do pay us to house them, which we also do for the Marshal Service." Lane said the county does not have a policy that would decide how an individual undocumented person is handled, but if there is an ICE detainer, the county will honor it. Quad-Cities Interfaith, One Human Family, QC Alliance for Immigrants and Refugees, the Diocese of Davenport, League of United Latin American Citizens and Progressive Action have organized a 5 p.m. rally at the Scott County Jail for Calderon, who has been here for 15 years, and her husband and children, who are U.S. citizens. The Rev. Jay Wolin said there is no requirement to cooperate with ICE and no one should be deported for a misdemeanor offense. "We wanted to come together and let them know what our values are," Wolin said. "This is a moral issue, let alone a legal issue, on how we treat people." This story will be updated.

So, this "Reverend" is an expert on who or why people (who by the way are here illegally) should or shouldn't be sent back to their country of origin?? Fuck that guy. ship her ass back to where she came from-her first act upon entering our country was to break the law...fuck her too. Stick to what you know, Reverend, because you don't know squat about the law. I agree with you that she shouldn't be deported for a misdemeanor. Instead, she should be deported for being an illegal alien. Every breath she takes in this country, she is breaking the law, so just stick to what you know, 'k? ____________________________________________________ "I am your retribution." - Donald Trump, speech at CPAC, March 4, 2023

Article about tonight's rally with some photos. As expected, they spout the usual crap. http://qconline.com/news/local...9d-c7ed9eff035d.html Rally supports woman held on ICE detainer DEVAN PATEL Lee News Network 1 hr ago (0) A segment of the community is rallying behind an undocumented Scott County woman who was briefly taken into custody Thursday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. Maria Concepcion Hernandez Calderon was arrested Wednesday on the charge of shoplifting and held at Scott County Jail on an ICE detainer. Calderon was taken into ICE custody Thursday and transported to Cedar Rapids at noon before being released to her family. Quad-Cities Interfaith, One Human Family, QC Alliance for Immigrants and Refugees, the Diocese of Davenport, League of United Latin American Citizens and Progressive Action organized a rally in front of Scott County Jail to support Calderon and object to the Sheriff's Office cooperation with ICE. "People need to know it could be our brother," the Rev. Guillermo Trevino said. "It could be our sister. It could be a family member. We could be next and this is something we need to be very aware (of) and that's why we're here." According to her family, Calderon, whose six children and husband are U.S. citizens, was arrested for shoplifting at Von Maur after one of her children had put an item in her purse. Calderon has been in the community for almost 15 years, family members said. In the frigid conditions Thursday night, speaker after speaker spoke to the need to show the values of the community. Maria Bribriesco said the community must put pressure on the Sheriff's Office and the County Board of Supervisors to exercise discretion because of the voluntary nature of immigration holds. "It's really heartless and really was not necessary," Bribriesco said. Before the rally, Sheriff Tim Lane said Scott County Jail has had a contract with ICE for years to hold detainees. Earlier this year, that contract was renewed. "We are in a contract with ICE where we do hold ICE detainees for up to seven days," Lane said. "They are not our inmates. They are theirs and they do pay us to house them, which we also do for the Marshal Service." Lane said the county does not have a policy to dictate how any single case is handled, and if there is an ICE detainer, it is honored. The crowd assembled outside the courthouse said they want the Quad-Cities to be a welcoming community as it has been professed to be as cities and counties made prior proclamations in support of inclusion and acceptance. Rabbi Henry Karp said this was a defining moment when the community needs to show that "welcoming" was not just a word. "It's not just for Maria Calderon, but for all the Maria Calderons," Karp said. While Calderon was released to her family, speakers also reminded the crowd that this is not the end of the matter. "Every day, we must be vigilant and not allow this kind of injustice to happen," the Rev. Jay Wolin said. "It only will stop if we stop it. We must stand up."

Hey Rev. You sir are a moron. The injustice here is that this illegal alien has existed in 'our' country, enjoying the fruits of 'our' labors for some 15 years (with six kids you can darn sure bet she and her hubby are subscribed to multiple assistance programs). Personally, I'm damn tired of these ministers, reverends, priests, rabbi's, etc sticking their long noses into political issues. If you want to enjoy your tax exemption, stuff a sock in it. Or, opt to become a political operative and lose your tax exempt status. You should not however get it have it both ways. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. Every man should have several guns. Some years ago, the city council of Monza, Italy, barred pet owners from keeping goldfish in curved bowls. This law was meant to protect the fish from a distorted nature of reality, since bent light might show them an odd portrayal of their surroundings. *************************** Knowing more by accident than on purpose.

And the similarities don't end there. Goldfish pee a lot and their mouths seem to be in constant motion. Even while sleeping. *************************** Knowing more by accident than on purpose.

15 years later, still sticks her nose up at our laws and gets arrested for stealing. Real cream of the crop there. So I wonder how much she's stolen in those last fifteen years without getting caught? Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

Cut her some slack. She is just shoplifting the items that Americans are too lazy to shoplift. ______________________________________________________ Often times a very small man can cast a very large shadow
