For real?![]() |
I bought a new 2015 Legacy 3.6R back in fall of 2014 as my first Subaru. The headgasket issue was allegedly solved by then. I got the car to around 77k miles before I traded it in. The only issue was a weak battery that I replaced around year 3 or 4? I normally don't keep cars past 80k anymore. The furthest I got was my Olds Alero to 106k. I really liked the Legacy and was trading it in for a WRX but that required premium fuel so I went back to BMWs if I was paying for premium fuel. In 2020, I bought my daughter a new Impreza sedan (base model) for her 18th birthday. She just pasted 62k miles this month and we have had ZERO issues with it. She does the 6mo/6k oil change interval herself. I do everything else. For safety this past winter at 59k, I just did all her brakes (rotors and pads). The OEM stuff still had some life left but it was cheap and easy so safety first. My son just turned 18 but hasn't gotten his license yet. When he does, we're going to give him the Impreza and I will get my daughter a new Crosstrek. Not minority enough!

Thanks for the replies! I watched quite a few videos last night on the YouTube. I referenced MrSubaru1387 in an earlier post, and he has some great content. I found a video of his, below, where he details the infamous Subaru Head Gasket issues. The innerwebs is littered with folks proclaiming all Subarus have head gasket issues. It's really only the 2.5L SOHC & DOHC Naturally Aspirated (NA) "EJ" engines. The Turbo engines do not have the issue. MySubaru1387 states the problem is with the gasket material itself. It's a graphite coated head gasket and the graphite chips off over time and the gasket fails. The Turbo engines received a Multi Layer Steel (MLS) gasket. He states you should always use the MLS gasket and you won't have any more failures. In the video below, the first 10 minutes he talks about the engines that do and do not have head gasket problems. At the 10 minute mark he talks about the gaskets. If you're a gear head like me, it's interesting.

AND that problem was from years ago, not currently. In my list of web resources a couple of posts above, I didn’t list YT. I’ve been watching his videos for a while now even though mood his content is related to older models. I watch Driving Sports TV hosted by Ryan Douthit. He has several Subaru videos, and they show just how capable they are on his off-road testing areas. I’m not in the market for an Outback, but I’m waiting for his reviews on the new Outback models on his courses. Retired Texas Lawman

Picked up my '97 OB in 2009 as sort of a mini hauler/project. It had lots of service records and a headgasket job by the former Nice Car Subaru. Whereas, it's had a few issues since that time, HGs aren't one of them. The catalytic converter is still doing it's job come emissions ( knock wood). Someday it will find a new home, but it probably has a very limited market, probably a mechanically inclined buyer. ![]() https://downtownfortcollins.com/go/bg-automotive
