Was this in conjunction with an earthquake or something you think? Or just a domino effect? Either way it's crazy.

Isn't that caused by erosion?

That’s about ten miles west of my home. Well, approximately west. Haven’t felt any earthquakes for several years, so just the ongoing erosion process, I think.

Apparently it's from all the recent rains...

quote:
Geologist Pat Abbott said a bluff collapse isn’t uncommon right after a series of showers.

"This is a time of heightened gravity pole for failure because it's winter time, and we’ve had a lot of rain. The ground is saturated. It’s winter time there’s less sand on the beach, which means it’s easier for the waves to hit the cliffs. We also have the highest tides of the year right now," said Abbott.

What's that on the highest peak? A flag, antenna, person, another hang-glider?

Due to multiple storms over 3 consecutive weeks, the ground across most of the state is heavily saturated, seaside structures are at-risk since the ground is simply compressed sand.
Beach-side erosion is constant problem only exacerbated by this Winter's batch of storms.

There are many videos of large landslides, cliff collapses, etc., and one thing that becomes clear is that when small rocks start falling, especially over a large area, and the rate keeps increasing, it’s time to move on because it’s likely that something much bigger will happen soon.

KUSI is a local SD TV news station that is--amazingly--conservative. Dan Plante, the on-the-scene reporter, in discussing cliff collapse in nearby Pacific Beach (not Torrey Pines) added the additional information that homeless people have been digging caves into the soft sandstone bluffs, and speculated that might have contributed.

Why should I not be surprised...

The canyon that runs by Balboa Park and up to Mercy hospital was overrun with tents the last time I went through there.

Certainly the nude model I saw scurrying on the cliffside during a photo shoot had nothing to do with it, she only weighed 100 pounds.

I've seen that before, in an old movie. There's a tarantula the size of a two-story house lurking on the other side of that hill.
