The Trump administration has fired a shot across Big Tech's bow: The DOJ has announced it has begun an antitrust investigation into the practices of the likes of Facebook, Google, Amazon and the like.

This should be interesting.

Story here.

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

I think you're comparing apples to oranges here. The "harm consumers" here really translates to their censorship practices which I feel is going to bite them in the ass. Their role in society is much much more than simple companies who can legitimately make certain choices. They've gone way over the line.

Main reason Microsoft went nowhere was it was too late as their competition (eg Netscape) had already went out of business by all practical measures (eg having a handful of employees with same name on door but a shell of its former self).

The antitrust legislation centers around anticompetitive practices. Given that these companies have competition, I don't see this going very far. What you're talking about is something else entirely, and likely would have to be addressed with new legislation, either some sort of internet privacy bill, or a bill applying the rules that used to be applied to broadcast news (I forgot the name of the doctrine) to the big internet companies. Either of those would be a long haul to get through.
