My next door neighbor moved in less than a year ago. A couple of old ladies and a younger care-taker. We hardly ever interact with them other than the occasional greetings. When I went to my car on the driveway today, this was hung on their front door.

What should I do? I guess I need to buy some decent candies, so I don't become known as the neighborhood tightwad. The alternative is to go passive-aggressive, buy the same sign and point it back at them. This has the added bonus of confusing the urchins tomorrow. Big Grin

I must say, that is an odd sign for Halloween. Doesn't it imply you don't want to give out candies? If you aren't gonna participate, then why have decorations? Seems contradictory to me. Confused

Tell every kid that comes to your house it is your neighbors idea of a prank on trick or treaters. Let kids be kids...

Looks like an attempt at humor to me.

But I do not understand the Left Coast.

Yes, humor of a sort- the kind of sign you buy in the gift shop at Cracker Barrel.

Not necessarily a Left Coast thing. Little old ladies tend to go to bed veeery early.

Seems like a perfect opporunity to have on the dirty old man costume when the kids come to the door. In my case, I don't even have to change!

You should buy a copy of The Donner Party Cookbook, and sit there with it in your lap. Tell each kid that wants candy that they must choose a favorite seasoning.

That’ll solve your misinformation problem.

Exactly. Gift them a Bible study CD from Cracker Barrel, and maybe a fruitcake.

The elderly couple who lived across the street from my family when I was a kid would hand out candy when I was little, but eventually stopped. He had Parkinson's and needed her help to get around and she eventually couldn't do it, either. When "stand up from a sitting position" becomes a team sport, you aren't handing out candy.

And when that happens, the caretaker starts to have a couple drinks somewhat early.

I"ll bet not one kid and not more than 1 adult in a hundred will understand the reference to that Cookbook.

I’d embrace it and buy a shit ton of good candy to give out. But that’s my opinion, and I love Halloween and the trick or treating.

I would buy a couple deep plastic bowls, fill them with candy and place them on you neighbors porch.

Make sure you turn your lights off so you don’t get visitors.

That would be my guess as well, despite being in CA. Unless this was the Sierra region, not many would get the reference.

I am of course more amused than I am annoyed. It just seems so out of the blue. Too bad they aren't young hot co-eds, that would be a clear invitation for a neighborly chat. Big Grin
