I saw this nasty , oily & charred wood, stone & case a couple weeks ago. Just touching it left crap on my hands that I had to wear off. But upon closer examination of the stone (95-98%) and the construction of the box I knew I had to bring it home & get it back into serviceable condition. Mainly for straight razors & knives. Being $4.50 made it a no brainer.
This is why I love scrounging Antique , junk stores & auctions. This box was made from one piece of wood. Split in half (matching end grain) and carved to fit the stone.
All buffed & polished. Ready for use.
I left some of the damage & as much character on as possible.

If the stone has some dish to it, you can flatten it by getting a corse, medium, fine diamond grit plates from harbor freight. Soak it in water, or mineral oil if it is an oil stone. Start with corse till you get it flat, the bring it down to fine. Touch up with fine to keep it flat.
