In the Cessna 200 series, there is a fuel boost pump switch that is in two halves; both together make for a high fuel flow, one half is a lower fuel flow. The airplane can experience something called a "fuel flow fluctuation," and the procedure in the aircraft manual, still wrong after all these years, is to turn on the boost pump on the high setting, and adjust the throttle and mixture, and switch tanks. Doing that can guarantee an unrecoverable engine failure.
The Cessna 210 that I owned prior to the Bonanza, did not have a split switch. It had a single toggle switch, three positions: Off, Low, High.

You might be referring to a later model. My 210 was the original issue, 1960 model.

Same thing; later models used a split switch to do it; low for the yellow left half, high for both switches. It doesn't matter. The procedure is what's wrong. Going to boost, high or low can cause an irrecoverable engine failure. If the throttle is reduced first, then tanks switched to fresh, cool fuel with a different escape path for pump bypass fuel, the problem is corrected immediately. The bad counsel is still in the AFM, however, as far as I know. It applies to all the 210 models, and the reason is the kidney sump tank into which wing flows before it goes to the fuel selector (sump drain just below the strut, or on most models, below where the strut would attach).

For pilots to supposedly be able to be so focused, I'm always surprised how a specific topic that deals with an aviation issue so quickly branches off into a discussion of completely unrelated specifics.

You guys sure ADD isn't a requirement for a pilot's license?

Ethiopian Airlines will reportedly send the black boxes to "a European country" rather than the US as would be usual. Which could be interpreted as distrust of an American investigation, following criticism of the FAA's "failure" to ground the type, convenient media reports about a cozy relationship between Boeing and the US government, etc.

I'm coming back to the Boeing-Airbus PR lobby wars; after Airbus incidents there have frequently been suggestions by the Boeing camp of the French covering up evidence for technical causes. My suspicion solidifies that actors in that long-running tit-for-tat are involved in the current dramatization, which will clearly help to establish the facts ...

One minute we're talking about a 737 the next thing you know about how if you flip the kanutin valve on a 210 before you switch jingtingler to the red position well third world pilots and airlines suck. 8,000 hours, about 2,000 take offs and landings, isn't really 8,000 hours. WWII fighter pilots make better airline pilots because they flew airplanes instead of the other way around.

Always entertaining is the my pilot foo is better than your pilot foo as well as the one-upsmanship.

Well that's interesting. And I have my doubts about the investigation now.

Interesting.

Boeing CEO Asked Trump Not To Ground 737 Max 8 After Second Deadly Crash: Report

Heard an story from a fairly reliable source that on this topic, (1) Boeing knew of the software issue before the Indonesia crash and (2) that the "fix" went out to the US carriers first, possibly undisclosed.

Should be interesting.

Germany in fact, by latest reports. That's going to make it a case for the Federal Authority for Flight Accident Investigation in Braunschweig.

Even if the actual box and recorder go to another country, can’t a copy of the data be sent to the FAA for independent analysis?

ETA: Just heard the Ethiopians don’t have the equipment to analyze the boxes. While I wouldn’t expect them to, why are they even tampering with them? Send NTSB now.

Several days ago I read an article in a non-aviation publication (I think it was USA Today) that in the Max 8 design Boeing moved the wing back on the fuselage to compensate for the heavier engines, and thus made the plane more susceptible to aerodynamic stall. I have not seen this mentioned anywhere in the aviation publications and I find it hard to believe that such a change was made. Looking at specs for the Max 8 and the NG versions of the 737 I see no such difference. Also, I find it hard to believe that Boeing would design a plane that could not be hand flown by a competent pilot. I have not flown anything larger that a KingAir but I find it amazing that they could not control these planes (assuming that they turned off the autopilot and the MCAS).

So Trump has now bought into the madness and issued an emergency to ground all the 737 MAX 8 & 9's.

Personally I think this is all just so ridiculous.

I guess the politial pressure just got too much.

I don't think it is at all.

There's indications that Boeing didn't make this MCAS override procedure clear and even tried to conceal the software updates.

So we're going to join the mob and take the word of the media and anonymous sources, eh? Before a preliminary investigation is even complete, we're going to listen to experts like Blumenthal and Warren. Well sure, why not?

Just got an update from ALPA, that the grounding today was due to new evidence that has come to light to the FAA today. As well new reports from the site.
