My asked me to pick a few things up at the store, so I grabbed some butter figuring I might be missing out after reading this thread. I bought Kerrygold, Plugar, and President plus I had Publix at home. All salted. I put a pat of each on a piece of bread.
Purely based on taste, because I don't care what it looks like or what the cows ate cause I don't eat that stuff:
President hands down. It tastes the way butter, start to finish. It was on sale, $4 for 14 ounces.
Kerrygold was a distant second. It was buttery enough, but President was a step above.
Third goes to Publix. It's AA graded, but it has an off taste that I've noticed in the past, but now that I compared it to others, it's really noticeable.
That puts Plugar in last place. It was the most expensive as well. When I first popped it and it's piece of bread in my mouth, I didn't get any butter flavor. After chewing it a bit, I really got a margarine taste instead of butter.
I may give some more a try.
Edited to show that President Butter comes in 7oz packages. I had originally stated it was on sale for $4 a pound.This message has been edited. Last edited by: trapper189,

Actually I do the same on occasion. I usually prefer heavy cream. When not available, I'll use milk or butter. If butter, generally use unsalted for coffee - a nice hefty chunk.

Just a tiny bit. About 1/4 of a normal pat. You really don't taste butter, but the coffee has a richer flavor. Especially good with really strong blend coffees consumed black with no sweeteners. I thought it was weird until I tried it

Hmmm...now I need to try this Smjör and President. Not sold yet on the KG since it costs 2.5x my local butter and not yet convinced it is 2.5x better. It is probably 1.5x better.

I rationalize this expense. Yep 2x the price of plain old domestic brands and maybe not 2x better, but definitely better according to my taste. So an extra $3 for the good stuff. Two sticks will last my household at least two weeks unless we have people over to eat. That's not going to crash our monthly budget. Enjoying a good meal with quality ingredients is a little please I've come to enjoy, so it's worth it to me. If some day I find myself needed to pinch every penny to scrape by, I'll rethink that. I ate store brand butter for most of my life so no big deal.

Finally got to try the Kerrygold. Much better than the last batch of stuff I've been using (which was good except last batch).
I've heard Smjor (Iceland, not Ireland) is very good. Will buy and compare next time I go to Whole Foods.

I use 2 tbsp of Kerrygold along with 2 tbsp of MCT oil.

I get that. It's not the actual price per se, but the value you get from the price you pay. Kinda like a generic smart tv from Wally vs a Sony XBR. I'll gladly pay the Sony price even if it costs 4-5x. That's just me though. I still enjoy the KG very much. I need to make a trip to WF for that Icelandic butter.

We've tried the French President but feel it falls short of Irish KerryGold.
Anyone tried Danish Creamery European Butter? It has the same high fat content of KerryGold but is US made and cheaper?

I don’t know if its readily available here, but the French butter is really good. We used to get fresh baguettes, butter, ham, and cheese there that made fantastic sandwiches.

We usually grab what ever-Publix, Land O lakes, President Kerry Gold-just depends on what's on sale.
I must say that I can't tell bit of difference between them.
But I don't generally eat toast, so I use butter to cook with, or on freshly cooked vegetables like corn or peas or... and especially when I cook ribeye or chuck eye steak.
