I'm gonna choose to go with a positive spin on this one. I didn't see a rear view mirror on the rocket, so the good news is that he didn't know exactly how deep into the poop storm he'd flown until he pulled the "ACME Rocket Parachute" lever on the dash.
So the positive spin? He was only sure of the outcome for the second half of his flight....

As soon as it left the rails, it yawed hard. When the chute tore loose, the rocket rapidly accelerated, so he probably knew things were going all ACME.
