It is true that there have been many, many failed rocket launches. Failure of all types -- fuel, explosions, guidance systems, software, structural integrity, improper materials, materials fatigue, landing systems, re-entry systems, human error. The failures occurred over decades. The failures occurred in spite of untold billions and billions of dollars in research and testing. The failures occurred with the best and brightest minds trying to conquer rocketry challenges.
Evidently Mike Hughes tried to build a hobbyist rocket on a shoe-string budget. Tested his designs with his life on the line, instead of going through the normal unmanned testing sequences. Apparently tried to sensationalize his rockets with TV broadcasting. Definitely used his dip-shit flat earth concepts to sensationalize his rocketry.
Every single one of us has done some pretty asinine things in our lives. Most of us live to tell the tales over a beer or two. Mike Hughes won't get to tell any more tales over beers, but the rest of us know how really fucking asinine he was.

I am not going to judge this guy. He is no different than the person getting on a motorcycle with out a helmet. Driving it at a high rate of speed at night on a challenging highway after a couple belt's at the local hangout. Or the guy driving his little hot rod at 90mph and blew a tire and ended up hitting a tree road side.
He did what he did because that is what he wanted to do. He knew the risks. Sure, maybe he was a dumbass in your eye's. But not a lot different than the rest of the dumbass' that died today doing something that you would find idiotic. And worthy or your "darwin award."

Every time I stand on the beach at any of our favourite spots along the coastline of southern Oregon, I look out to the incredible seascape of the Pacific Ocean and SEE, with my own eyes, the obvious curvature of the horizon. If I want to see it from a higher viewpoint, I stop off at the Oswald West state park lay-by and observation point on 101 just north of Manzanita/Nehalem.
It's just as obvious there, too.

I know a flat-earther. There is absolutely nothing anyone can come up with that they don't have an answer for. My friend said that astronauts' masks distort the view through them making the earth look round. He'd probably suggest the same thing about airplane windows.
