I have a 20-year-old generic version of that hat.. with actual rabbit fur. It really will almost keep you warm with just the hat on!

I have the upgraded version (Leather w/ Natural Rabbit Fur), and honestly I've never really worn it outside as it's just too warm for any active endeavor. I originally thought I'd use it while clearing the driveway with the snowblower, but a soon as I put it on I knew it wouldn't work for that, at least for me anyway. They say you lose a majority of heat from your head, and in my case that would be an understatement! During any outdoor work and/or physical exertion my head tends to sweat, and with a shaved head, that would mean a VERY sweaty Mad Bomber!

If you plan on standing around outside for any length of time, it would probably be great for that, especially in extreme cold weather.

That said, I'll just leave this here... Wink

I thought that was the point, besides #1 being staying warm.

B-9B veteran here. Its warm. but if you dont go flaps down right away and let the fuzz get wet / snowy, it can be miserable. I had to wash mine often as it would sweaty and oily from my hair.

I have an el-cheapo version I got from Cabella's a decade or two ago. The shell is nylon and the lining looks like acrylic fleece. If I recall correctly, it cost about $5.

I never wore it all that much since it is too hot if you are active. But I'm older now and it's just the thing for walking down to the mailbox or clearing snow off the sidewalk.

I see Cabella's has several models in the $30 to $50 price range. Many have real fur.

When I was stationed in the Republic of Korea, in 1971-72, some of us got issued the M1943 Winter Pile Cap. We were required to wear "pile caps" in the winter. I kept mine until I retired in 1985.

My wife has a plaid one. She does not care how she looks as long as she's warm.

I want one. We are headed for -2° this weekend, but Amazon says it can't deliver it for a month.... I'll put it on the list for next year.

I have a Duluth Trading Company hat that is a slight variation on the "mad bomber". I call it my Elmer Fudd Hat. It has a visor like a baseball cap that helps a bit to keep the rain and snow off of my glasses. The real rabbit fur ear flaps are incredibly warm and comfy (and the real fur doesn't bother me. Rabbits reproduce quickly, and I certainly hope they do eat them because it would be wasteful not to...they're delicious). The only downside is that it's kinda hard to hear through...you could almost use them as ear pro on the range.

I only wear it when it's really cold out and I'm outside for a long time like walking the dog or on the range. I've worn it well into the negatives and even in high wind the parts that it covers stay warm. For anything above 20 degrees or so I have a merino wool beanie that is small enough to easily fit in a pocket and not so overwhelming on the head.

Wore one in an armored unit in West Germany late 1960s. Yes, extremely warm! Tank heaters (M60 series) rarely worked as intended.

When I lived in Colorado I used to have a hat a friend from Alaska gave me. Native made from a wolf pelt with ear flaps. The best part, it included the tail running down the back of the hat. Warmest hat I ever had and it really pissed off the tree huggers at the ski resorts.

I live in south Louisiana, so I am no expert on cold weather or warm hats.

But as to the fur being on the outside of the hat, it occurs to me that the fur was on the outside of the rabbit, and it worked for him.
