That’s three lucky dudes right there. I love the snap of them wearing hospital gowns while shopping for new clothes. Typical Montana. Love it!

They should also go buy lottery tickets immediately!

No fooling around anywhere within bear distance of Yellowstone. I’d keep one eye peeled for bear while out elk hunting, or whatever.

Seems to be a handful of run-ins every Fall, mostly bow hunters. No legal Grizzly season is on the horizon.

Saw a big sow with two fairly large cubs last week, 15 miles from where I'm typing this. They really range far and wide this time of the year.

Getting into grain spills, road killed deer, whatever they can for calories.

Headed to Glacier to do a hike this next week weather permitting. I'll carry my bear spray in my hand most of the hike I expect. Great time of the year to be at GNP as it's deserted compared to summer months. But a bad time for the bears.

Thing is, WE have hunting seasons.

Bears, in general, don't give Jack Sh*t about hunting seasons.

For some, this is news.

Apparently the bears in Canada are smarter than ours and know English/French (or so he thought):

Griz used to care about hunting seasons, back when we could tag them. It has been years since one could hunt griz in Montana. Back then we only saw them in remote area, or parks. Now the Depuyer school fences the playground to protect the children from griz. Griz roam all over. Easy fix. Open a limited tag season on griz.

We see mostly Black Bear in Glacier National Park but occasionally a Grizzly will we lumbering near the road.

I have two friends that were attacked by Grizzly Bears near Glacier. Both survived but got roughed up pretty good. I don't know what they wore when shopping for replacement clothing but I know it wasn't the same pants.

We have one or two threads about grizzly bears in the forum every year. If I’ve responded, it’s been as an advocate of bear spray. My support for it came from personal conversations with those who should be in a position to know best, grizzly bear researchers and predator conflict resolution specialists from USGS and Wyoming G&F.

I will admit that one researcher from USGS told a pretty scary story of working a trap site and a sow grizzly that kept coming again-and-again. They used up two cans of bear spray. The charges were finally broken off when he fired a 12 gauge slug by the ear of the sow, close enough that she had no doubt the next would be in the ear.

Anecdotally, in AARs of bear charges, the bear spray seemed to work well enough to continue to advocate for it being the first line of defense. Ultimately, although I have had more training than all but one or two members here, I’m still not certain I could reliably read the body language of a bear and determine, with any certitude, whether this a bluff charge or a serious, potentially fatal attack. Long preamble to introduce this article. Essentially, what it says is that firearms and bear spray for defense have NEVER been truly studied side-by-side to demonstrate that bear spray IS the most effective means of protecting yourself.

When I went fly fishing, on my own time, I carried a .44 mag in a chest holster along with my bear spray. I had determined that, given time to make the decision, I would deploy the bear spray first. Remember, for myself, and those I spoke with, killing a grizzly was something that was almost unthinkable because of the repercussions in, not just the community, but nationally.

See what you think. BTW, Outside Magazine is not way up there in my estimation for go-to reading material.

I thought this article might be more important than a black bear cub

I’ll never carry bear spray over firearms, Here in AK, bears are everywhere I was moose hinting by boat alone about 90 miles away from the nearest town last week and saw several bears, I was glad to have my 10mm and my 375HH over a can of spray, not tat I worry about bears that much.

Mrs DF and I were just in that same grizzly country. Even though we were appropriately equipped she kept her head so swiveled that she could hardly enjoy the hike. lol Did I mention she hates bears? Big Grin I told her that if attacked she should let me get between her and the bear. There's enough of me to satisfy the savage appetite. She can escape. She was not amused. Then she read a sign that stated that this area is frequented by grizzly and that folks had been injured and killed here. She cut our hike short. Fine by me. Got an early lunch out of it.
