I took my son to the Lego store and felt terrible afterwards!
There is an unauthorized Brick Depot as it is called just north of Cincinnati.
We had to take the oldest boy to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital north campus today for an extensive eye exam. It’s a 2.5 hour drive from our house and the appointment was at 8:45. The exam was a little over 2 hours and he did great. They still believe it maybe a numerological issue but for now he only has to be patched an hour a day for 4 months and they changed his glasses prescription slightly. He has a follow up in 4 months if the issue is remedied then no need for a Neurology Ophthalmology visit.
So for being such a trooper at the hospital I took him to this Lego store as he loves Legos.
I figured he would be over the moon as it was a surprise. He walks in kind of looks around and just stands there. I tell him to go pick some stuff and he has about zero interest. I was quite confused. After walking him around a bit and me kind of pointing out what I thought would be cool we grabbed a few and left.
As we walked out the door he stops me and says Dad, can we come Back here sometime when I can see??

I had completely forgotten then did some super extra dilation for this exam.
He had no clue what he was looking at but a bunch of blurry colors.

Don't feel terrible. You're just being a good dad. When I was a kid and attacked by a dog, parents took me out for ice cream for being a good/tough boy and not crying for the attack or procedure.

I couldn't eat the ice cream, it just dribbled out my mouth due to my all the shots of novacaine I had. Still remember it to this day as a funny, not a terrible memory (ice cream part, not attack park).

He'll probably be telling this story to his kids.

Oh dayem. I hope someday soon it becomes a story you laugh about.

You swing for the fences thinking for sure it’s going to be a home run and sometimes you strike out. Just part of the adventure.

Ah, you're a good dad, Just remember that you never read the manual they sent home with him after he was born...oh yeah, there was no manual.

It's all OTJ training. You'll both look back at this and the memory will be pleasant.

It’s okay because payback will be in the form of you stepping on said legos while barefoot

Don’t worry - I don’t think you can buy a bad set of Legos. I have 5 Grandkids ages 8-14. The have enough Legos, between them, to build a ranch style home.

Don't feel bad. It happens. At least you tried, and he knows it. It sucks when your kids are hurting. I'm not a really emotional guy, but it tears me up when my kids are sick or hurt, and like you I'd take stuff like that pretty hard. Thankfully, dilation is not a permanent thing and you guys can go back together some other time when his eyes are back to normal.

That's too bad about the Lego store Frown

I just had a follow-up eye exam day-before-yesterday. They must've gone a bit heavy on the dilation stuff or used something a bit more potent than in the past. Usually I have no problem driving home after dilation. Not in the daytime, anyway.

Not this time.

I was ok. Was being extra careful. But, man, it was an uncomfortable drive.

Years from now, you two will share a sodapop over this story and laugh. Years later, the two of you will share a beer over this story and laugh harder.

You've made a great, silly, memory. Enjoy!

FWIW when I was 10 (1962) my aunt, her daughter, my mother and I went on a two week trip west from Michigan. Took the northern route U.S.16 to Wyoming, south through the Rockies into Phoenix for a few days and back home on U.S. 66.

I complained about things being blurry especially in the distance, couldn’t see much of the Painted Desert and Grand Canyon. So when we got home it was off to the Optometrist for an exam. Verdict, glasses.

Yes, she felt bad about that too. But, that’s life. At least you tried and you both have the memories.

oh, wow. I can see how that last line made your heart stop. But kids are resilient and he knows your intent. I can almost feel how you felt. I'm sure he'll enjoy it when you go back.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." My mom always took me for ice cream. There was a Woolworth's next to the doc's building. I actually looked forward to the doc's office because I knew it meant Ice Cream Smile

Dont sweat it, but to make up for it, you must buy the Millennium Falcon kit. Smile
