CBS has a short PSA for Native American Heritage Month encouraging us to "Celebrate Wilma Mankiller, first female chief of the Cherokee Nation".

I had never heard of her, but a glance at Wikipedia suggests she lead a substantial life as an activist and social worker and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I am curious what we know of her beyond the cursory examination of fawning media reports. I am a little suspect of anything CBS suggests we should celebrate.

I have to say I suspect some on the left take particular glee in her last name.

I had to look her up as well. She apparently learned activism from her days in San Francisco and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Bubba.

She certainly had a rough life with polycystic kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, lymphoma, breast cancer, two kidney transplants, and died from pancreatic cancer.

Blatant virtue signaling. Can't you just see the idea taking form in a CBS staff meeting? "Hey how about this one? Touches all the bases"!

I preferred her sister, Tiffany "Sparkles" Homewrecker.

While looking her up I discovered Mankiller is one of 46 "activists" to have won the PMOF since LBJ. 40 of them awarded by Democrats, vs. 6 to activists by Republicans.

And, as an aside, Obama handed them out like candy with a total of 123 PMOF's awarded. More than any other President. Shocking, I know, right. Trump hasn't gotten around to handing one out yet. He's been a little busy.
