I've got a big Camo Pair of boot for cold weather hunts.

But I don't really have any boots that can wear with jeans or wear for short day hikes. Would prefer something in black leather or black goretex possibly. That way if I end up at a client site on Casual Friday's I'm not stomping around with something obnoxious on my feet.

Suggestions?

I have been looking for the exact type of the boot that you are wanting.

I have weird wide crappy feet so for me Merrils, Salomons etc. are out for me.

I am going to try New Balance. They have come out with a casual boot line and have them in a wide array of widths and colors.

A lot of my friends where Salomons and swear by them.

I have some Vasque Breeze GTX and the Pro Bass Shop version that Vasque makes (made? As I don't know if they still have that boot.) for them. I love them. Comfortable, light and thought they are brown, they don't scream "boot".

They have Gore Tex, and I believe that the they were under $200.00.

Timberland has a lot of options across a broad price range. Some with gortex waterproofing.

I'm a huge Danner fan and have 4 pair of them. My favorite ones for casual wear and day hikes are the 6" Strikers. They are light weight and have a layer of Gore-Tex to keep your feet dry.

Lowa!!

They have many styles.
I have a pair of Uplander GTX TF for Duty Boots and they are the best I have come across.

Also have a set of mid height Zephyr GTX for hiking and hunting. Can’t be beat. The Zephyrs look a little odd with the rubber sole criss cross coming up the side but do a great job protecting the side of you feet on rocky terrain.
Not cheap but worth every penny.

These are my go to hunting boots. Made for me by White back in the 80's. They were pricey but have taken me all through Idaho, Montana and here in Missouri. And, they literally fit like a pair of gloves.

Do you want mid or, low? Price range?
Order from Zappos, they offer free shipping and returns, not uncommon for their customers to order 5 and return 4.

Some suggestions:
Lowa Renegade Mid
Keen Targhee III
The North Face Hedgehog Mid
The North Face Back-to-Berkeley
Salomon Quest 4
Vasque Talus Trek Mid
Oboz Sawtooth Mid

Vasque - Have a pair right now and absolutely love them.

Lowa - Had a pair for years that literally went everywhere between Alaska and Hawaii. Finally wore through their sole. Went to bu a new pair and they have changed their sizing and no longer fit, why I went with Vasque.

Danner -Have been extremely happy with their US made products. Their imported stuff I'm about 50-50 on. Have a set of their insulated Canadian boots that have served me well for years. I wear their duty boots at work (trauma RN) and so far they have been good. Their TFX desert boot was garbage and the sole came separated from the upper after light wear. I've got a pair of their casual GTX mountain boots, they're comfortable at first but do not do well on long hikes.

No matter how well-designed and well-made a pair of boots is, they have to fit well, and everyone's feet are different.

What might be the single best pair of boots on earth for me might make you want to chop your feet off with an axe after hiking a few miles in them.

There's no substitute for physically going to a store with a good selection, trying on a bunch of different brands and styles, and walking around in them. (Except maybe for getting something custom made - if you're going to use them a lot and have the money to burn.)

Gore-tex (and other, similar waterproof products) is a thin, relatively fragile, waterproof fabric that is included as an internal layer in a piece of clothing or footwear. It doesn't have anything to do with what something looks like on the outside (aside from the tiny GORE-TEX logo every company that uses it sticks somewhere on the item). You can find Gore-tex boots made from all different kinds of leather and fabric.

I like Lowa, too, but it is all about fit. What works for some won't fit others. Go to REI or someplace and try them on.

Been wearing some Oboz lately and have been liking them pretty well. They’re waterproof but do not use GoreTex.

The mid and low Sawtooth are what I have.

This.

Merrell MOABs are my casual shoe/boot of choice.

I have four different colors, in three different styles.

Frye Combat boots. I’ve abused mine almost daily for the last 3+ years and they just keep getting better. I’ve had the soles replaced twice in that time frame, but I wear them Monday - Friday for 10-12 hours. I forget they’re even on when I finally make it home.
