Ammo Box Sources?
Tried to find an existing thread. Came up bupkis.

Need two or three 50 cal. (preferably) ammo boxes. Midway no longer has 'em. Anybody have any leads?

My local BJs wholesale club used to sell them. Not sure if they still do.
If you are a member and have one close to you try giving them a call.

MTM and Plano offer plastic .30 and .50 ammo boxes that are significantly better quality than the cheap Habor Freight plastic ones.

They're available from Amazon and Midway.

Do they stack cleanly on mil/mil-style metal ammo cans?

No, but they stack cleanly on each other (among the same brands and models).

And to clarify, the plastic MTM/Plano cans are better than the plastic Harbor Freight ones.

Tractor Supply had them last time I was there.
Haven't checked them out up close to see how the quality is, though.

MTM makes ammo boxes that come with 10 100-rd. boxes inside, which is great for reloading.

I have stacks of harbor freight boxes. They're not particularly strong, but I'm not hauling things around much in them. They're just for storage and organization. I also use them for magazines. Some models have 50 or more magazines stored up, so the harbor freight boxes work great for keeping everything separate.

MTM also makes a great flat crate that's useful if you've got bulk purchases or a Lot of ammo to stack. They're low profile so the stack doesn't get as high, making it more stable, and they're handy when there are a bunch of different size or shapes of things to put in there.

And then for the mother of set-ups, If you want bulk storage, crate-traps that carry 3, 4, or 5 30-cal size ammo boxes (holds up to 700 rds 9mm each):

You can buy directly online. Ammo boxes on sale in clearance right now:

Check your local Craigslist.

I have one guy near me that has been selling surplus military ammo cans for years and years on Craigslist. Prices are good, condition is good, and no chinese made crap. He's dependable and good to deal with, will even meet up halfway if you order $100 bucks worth or so.

I'm looking at the metal HF boxes.

Thanks for the hint. Hadn't thought to check CL or FB Marketplace. There's a guy about 1-1/2 to 2 hours away that has the Real Deal. A bit far to drive, though.

I'll take a look at HF's metal boxes, first.

Just purchased 18 M2A2 cans from these guys. Real military issue and used, not Chinese.

Also, a veteran owned business.

CleanAmmoCans.com

I got the grade 1 cans, and other than the stenciling and handling marks, they look as good as any you would get from Sam's, Walmart, Harbor Freight or anyplace else.

How badly did they nick you on shipping?

Cans have really dried up these last few years. Had 2 or 3 guys who sold at the MT gun shows...now all out.

Back in the early 70's there was a literal mountain of them at Ft Dix/Mc Guire AFB's munition area. I'd always snag a few 20mm cans, fill them with .30's and .50's and throw them in the back of the line truck, to take home. Good times.

Done. About $18 ea. w/shipping for a 3-pack.

Thanks for the lead, bozman!

No problem...

I am still filling mine with loaded mags. May run out of ammo cans before I run out of mags to load and store in them.

Yep. There's a local outdoor supply store that, back in the 2000s and early 2010s, used to have a mountain of surplus .50 and "Fat .50" ammo cans that they sold for $6-$8 each.

But that dried up 5+ years ago. They said they used to buy pallets of them every few months through government auctions, but can't get them any more.

Luckily, I bought several dozen while they were available for cheap.
