I have a Paperwhite and it is still working. I'm a big reader, so it gets a lot of use. Is the Oasis worth the upgrade?

I think so.

I had a Paperwhite and moved to the Oasis a couple of years ago. The Oasis has got some useful features that the Paperwhite does not.

The Oasis has a "warm" light feature that makes the wife happy because I like to read in bed and she said the "harsh" white light from the Paperwhite would keep her awake.

The feature I like is the page turn buttons. If I'm reading, I can keep turning the pages simply by keeping my thumb next to the page turn button and turn the pages with a slight gesture. It's not a big deal, but it's a nice convenience I think.

The only "negative" is that I liked the smaller size of the Paperwhite. I take my Kindle with me everwhere. I could easily put the Paperwhite into the back pocket of whatever I was wearing. The Oasis is too big for some of the pants or shorts I might be wearing.

I bought a new Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (32 GB) two months ago. The hue of its “backlight” (which is actually a front light) can be adjusted from cool to warm.

IMO, the Oasis is a downgrade, not an upgrade. I typically hold my Paperwhite in the palm of my left hand, with my thumb at its left edge, and my middle, ring, and little fingers at its right edge. So comfortable, but the Oasis is too wide for that hold.

For next page: touch the screen most anywhere, or swipe left. For previous page: touch the screen near its left side, or swipe right. What could be simpler?

The Oasis could be held by its wide edge, cantilevered out in space, but that sounds uncomfortable to me.

The current version of the Paperwhite has adjustable backlighting warmth.

The lighting for the Kindle Paperwhite I bought my wife a bit over a month ago is backlighting.

I believe that you’re wrong. The Kindle “backlight” is actually a front light. The Kindle e-ink display is opaque.

“In Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite, four [more nowadays] LEDs mounted on the bottom of the reader shoot light toward the surface of the display. Barnes & Noble’s lighting, called GlowLight, has a similar system with LEDs. Both these glowing e-book readers cost $120.”

I read about 65 books a year on my Oasis. I read in my comfortable leather chair, my outdoor chair and in bed. My Oasis is perfect in every reading location. I don’t know how Amazon could make these any better beyond an easily replaceable battery. I bought mine in November of 2019.

Perhaps so, but, looking at it, it's indistinguishable from backlighting to my eyes *shrug*

Few people understand the Kindle illumination technology. Reading the link in my earlier post would help you with that.

That's good to know. Thanks.

While I really like the buttons on the Oasis, I like the size of the Paperwhite. Knowing it has "warm" light is going to make it tough to choose when its time to retire my current Oasis.

If your PaperWhite is working well, probably not worth the upgrade. But if you're buying a Kindle anyway, the Oasis might very well be worth it.

I have one of each. I find the Oasis much better for reading in bed. The PaperWhite goes with me anyplace I might have to sit on my narrow ass in a waiting room -- doctor office, etc.

They stay in sync. I can read on one, and if I pick up the other, the book is on the same page.

For the benefit of folks that don’t know: For that to work your Kindles need a Wi-Fi/Internet connection (not necessarily at the same time). It’s the Amazon “Whispersync” technology. Works for the Kindle app on your phone or tablet too.

I would get a new paperwhite. I’ve read probably a hundred books on each and like the PW better. My Oasis is really glitchy and locks up at least once every hour or so.

I suggest that you get the latest software for your Oasis.

Website with current Kindle software:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/help...eId=GKMQC26VQQMM8XSW

P. S. To determine the current revision of your Kindle software:

From the Kindle home screen tap the Menu icon (upper right).

Select Settings from the list that appears.

From the Settings list select Device Options.

From the Device Options list select Device info.

The “Firmware Version” value is your answer.

That's what I'll get if I change my mind and get one, after all.

They are nice, and no mistake.

I'm currently facing something of a quandary. I now deeply distrust in Amazon with their having recently added adverts to (paid) Amazon Prime, but we're also already somewhat invested in Kindle what with me having bought $100 or so of books over the last year and a Kindle Paperwhite reader for my wife for Christmas.

So: Stop now before our exposure to Amazon's arbitrary and undesirable decisions gets any greater, thus reducing the value of the Christmas present for my wife, or roll the dice and pray Amazon doesn't do something similarly noxious with Kindle?
