Possible Job Offers in Charlotte NC and Edenton NC Need info and/or opinions on both Login/Join

Good Evening forum members. I hope everyone is well.

As the subject line stated I am seeking information on both cities due to the possibility of having jobs offers in both areas.

On Monday/Tuesday of this week I was in Greenville NC at the area office finishing my paperwork, medical and Psych for Probation and Parole. The position would be in Chowan County/Edenton. I would live in either Edenton or Elizabeth City.

The other position is in Charlotte for the Charlotte Medical Examiners Office as an Investigator.

The pay for Chowan County is $34500 to start and rising to $38400 after a year. All the OT is banked as comp time.

The pay for the Medical Examiners Office is $46,200 to start.

Thoughts, opinions.

To me they are both great opportunities but I do not want to struggle living wise and barely making bills. I have done that enough here in VA and for once I want to enjoy life.

I am used to living in a City. I grew up in Columbus, Ohio (spent 29years there) then Richmond, Northern VA, Silver Spring MD etc... I am spoiled here in Richmond with sports, Walmart, my gym, gas station all with 3 miles..

I know Charlotte has minor league sports and Pro Basketball. I don't know anything about Edenton except between them and Elizabeth City there are only four gyms and they are a tad pricey.

Any information/help would be greatly appreciated.

$46,200 can do it in Charlotte, depending on what "it" is you want to do. Housing is pretty expensive (for NC). Figure $1,200/month for a decent place to live. As far as activities, Charlotte has a bit of just about everything. Panthers, Hornets, Lake Norman, White Water Center, etc. etc. etc.

What does the salary growth look like for the CLT job?

I have known a lot of probation/parole people. Dated one (10/10 on the crazy scale, but that's a book all on its own Wink). It can be a rewarding and fun job, but the state pay is not very impressive.

Now...I know a certain police department in Charlotte (wink wink) that is hurting for bodies, and pays very well for NC...

There won't be a lot of entertainment in Edenton. Quiet little town, or at least it used to be. Historic town, but quiet.

Lots of water around EC and Edenton. Not much else. Lots of crime around Charlotte. Not much water.

Definitely apples / oranges.

How old are you?

If young-ish... Charlotte for sure. One of my kids graduated from college there and likes it. Getting by at ~ $35K with a roommate.

Middle-age / married / kids ??? maybe Edenton.

In my mind - I would opt for Charlotte - way more opportunity across the board in case the primary does not work out.

Good luck-

Edenton is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in NC, waterfront, excellent hunting and fishing, nice people, close to the beach. I would never live in Charlotte if Edenton was an option.

My only experience with Elizabeth City, was 2 years ago passing through going to Ocracoke. Thought it was a typical coastal town, what little I saw.

Is it that bad?

Can't give the OP any advice on either place, but personally , would not live in ANY city, much less a large city.

Good luck with your choice.

Loved CLT. Hub airport makes travel simple. NASCAR. Small towns nearby if you want to commute to the big city. Shelby. Kings Mountain. Easy living. Plus, you would be featured in a Patricia Cornwell novel if she ever writes about Charlotte again.

Which job would be more interesting, and which would you gain more skills for future work? The Investigator job sounds more promising to me, and could probably lead to better jobs in the future.

Sometimes I have take a pay cut to start at a new facility, just so I could learn more.

I lived in EC for 7 years. My house was about one mile north of the city limits on US17. My power was supplied by Dominion power (better and cheaper). EC is basically a suburb of the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. I lived in Charlotte and Mooresville as a kid. personally of the two I'd live in EC. close to the beach and way less traffic and trouble. When you need city, head up to Chesapeake/Norfolk/VA Beach/... when you need country or beach, you are there. Edenton is also a quaint little town.

With the pay listed for Charlotte you'll have to live in a slum or out in one of the small areas out in Mecklenburg county. Way cheaper living in Edenton but little entertainment. Depends more on future opportunities and what you value most for way of life.

I moved to Charlotte for college and I'm still here 16 years later. If you are looking for cheaper housing, I would look in the suburbs like Pineville, Harrisburg, Matthews, ect. It really depends on where you will be stationed. PM me if you need more info.

Another idea, you can do the probation gig for a couple of years, and if you decide you want to try a different spot, you can transfer somewhere else. Charlotte has HUNDREDS of probation officers, and openings are pretty common.

If you do well, you can do something high-speed like being attached to a US Marshal's task force, or the FBI's Safe Streets gang unit, etc.

There are certainly options involved with the probation gig, and being in a smaller office may make them easier to reach.

And no shit...if you're interested in being a city cop, with a degree you'd be at over $55,000 after your first year at Charlotte.

I appreciate all the information everyone is providing.

Wow that is a seriously tempting offer. That is some serious money.

After ten years of working various assignments in LE, I want to try a different route for a year or two. If I don't like it I can always go back to working the street or become a trooper.

I originally moved to Charlotte in 1984 as a rising Freshman in High School. My parents moved me back to Columbus, Oh between my Junior and Senior year of High School. It took me 15 years to get back to Charlotte. I live in Union County now, south of Charlotte. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about living here. The people are great, the weather is great, the cost of living is reasonable, and it is close to the beach and mountains.

I would not live in Charlotte mainly because I like the "country" lifestyle... But if you want the night life and excitement of a city, Charlotte will not disappoint. I have a 24 year old son who lives near uptown Charlotte and is quite happy with that lifestyle.

There is everything to do in Charlotte - All the sports, concerts, and craft beer one could want.

If the summer heat gets to you, hop in the car and head to the mountains, its only a 90 minute drive.

There are lots of opportunities for career advancement, and change if needed.

The SigForum members here are pretty great people too... Smile
