As part of the D-Day 75th Anniversary remembrances, the Kentucky Air National Guard (my former unit) is participating in airborne drops, and to make it more realistic, Invasion Stripes livery is being displayed on the C-130s.

Wish they would have shown more pictures but damn that's a great look on those birds. I hope they're able to keep them on the planes for a year or more.

Just after 09/11, someone in the government came up with the idea of putting invasion stripes (black and white stripes on the wings and tail) on fire aircraft to identify us, the idea being that it would differentiate a legitimate aircraft flying low and dispensing chemicals, from a terrorist aircraft. It was a silly idea, I thought, but we had them for several years in certain aircraft.

When they came out with that plan, I was working a contract that included a large military area, which was manned with emplacements, sentries, etc. I often wondered, when going in there at low level for fires, how many of the kids on the machine gun posts had any idea what those stripes meant. Most likely zero, as nobody else seemed to know what they were for, either, and our flights in those areas were never announced.

A very big deal in the second world war when the skies were fully of aircraft, and gunners had to choose what to shoot.

Air Force Reserve C-130 from Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, AL is participating as well. I've been seeing one with invasion stripes flying around lately.

Those stripes look good on the Hercules. Very cool
