More probably a sign that their economy isn’t doing too great with less $s (US or CN) to spend.
The swanky south Jersey Shore towns are extremely sensitive to Wall St. Both for rentals and for sales. I've run numbers on buying a rental property there and it isn't even close to cash-flow neutral at best. All the buyers are betting on appreciation and the next buyer being a bigger fool. They are also probably offsetting large stock market capital gains with their paper losses on the rental property.
So when the upper-middle class renters start feeling tight on money and thus don't rent at the nicer towns, the owners quickly see their losses build and the property values plummet.
I've seen that cycle numerous times at the shore towns. I believe we are seeing the early days of Wall St wealth effect evaporating. Both for regular working folks who watch their retirement portfolios and for the high dollar Wall St financial and legal types.
Canada's economy? It's been terrible for a long time except for a few elites.

CANADA – A planned joint ceremony on Friday between the U.S. and Canada marking the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been canceled after President Trump announced a 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian imports, including alcohol and dairy.
“In light of trade action threatened by the United States earlier this week, it would be inappropriate to proceed with a celebratory event between the two countries,” Jenna Ghassabeh, a spokesperson for Canadian Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson, said in a statement to the Associated Press.
“We remain committed to opening the bridge on July 27th, and to celebrating this milestone among Canadians on July 24th,” she continued.

There were stories circulating here that Trump hates the Gordie Howe bridge because he isn't getting a cut of the tolls.
They are stupid TDS up here with limited exceptions. And Canada has imported so many 3rd world people that’s barely recognizable as a country descended from Europeans.
I barely recognize my home city and I’m disgusted with what they’ve allowed to happen.

Ran into a drunk Canuck on the Alaska cruise giving me and a buddy crap over Trump, I just told him A) Trump was better than that fruitcake dictator they had in Trudeau and B) we love Trump and hope he ran for another term and we don't really care what drunk Canadians think... LOL

I had a cordial convo via dm with a guy from Quebec and he said that most Canadians do not like American's but they are forced to deal with us because their economy is dependant on us.
