I went to a joint service tech school and saw a Marine officer pin on a Marine Corporals rank like that. When we graduated EOD school all the instructors pinned on our EOD badges the same way.

I have a video of him being promoted to Corporal (last time he was in Okinawa) and it was a formal ceremony. So they didn't do it then. No telling what happened later that night.

Boot camp to sergeant is three years? I don't know how the promotion timing works in the Marines, but that sounds impressive.

Well Done! E5 in 3 is danged impressive!

I'm retired Navy (I may have mentioned that...) and my grandson is now a (medically) retired Marine.

Talking with him, I was amazed at the difference in levels of responsibility related to paygrade between Marines and Sailors. As a Sergeant/E5, he was tasked with responsibilities in terms of personnel I didn't see until I was a senior E6 or even a junior E7 in the Navy.

I attained E5 (Navy) in about the same elapsed time, but I think it's a more impressive achievement in the Marines than it is in the Navy. My advancement was basically due to technical ability (missile systems -- Regulus); I really did not have any significant duties in terms of personnel, "military stuff," etc. My job was to insure that the birds were ready to launch when needed, I was a systems nerd or maybe a geek, I'm not quite sure what the difference is.

A smart and smart looking young man.

I wouldn't cross him.

The uniform and stripes suit him well.

Congratulations to him for his hard work and you for doing the hard work of raising him to be a fine man.

Congratulations and Semper Fidelis!

I loved the rank of Sgt. I'm my opinion, probably one of the best ranks in the Marine Corps.

Congrats, and no offense to the other people in that first picture, but just by looking at it you can immediately pick out which one would be the future Sgt.

Precisely. I made E4 in under a year while I was still in school due entirely to grades/technical ability.
