Ketchup is ok sometimes. Mustard is always strictly forbidden.
This is the only correct response in this thread. Razz

An acceptable variation would be to move the pickle to just below the meat.

At the most basic -

Top bun
mayo
mustard
ketchup
cheese
patty
bottom bun

If there are any other fixings like tomato, onion, lettuce, they go on top of the patty and cheese in no particular order.

My favorite burger goes like this:

Top bun (toasted)
BBQ sauce
Ranch
Crispy fried onion strings
Bacon
Beef
Pickles
Bottom bun (toasted)

I’m not a fan of cheese on any of my burgers (to me it’s just unnecessary) or lots of condiments on a classic burger; my classic burger is usually:

Top bun (toasted)
Lettuce
Onion (either finely diced or grilled)
Ketchup
Beef patty
Pickles
Bottom bun (toasted)

The only 100% hard-and-fast rule is cheese goes on right on top of the meat, where it melts.

The order of the rest of the stuff is a game-time decision.

Oh, and since most bun-bottoms are generally larger that bun-tops, the 'top' bun usually gets put underneath, to give more structural support.

So, top to bottom:

'bun bottom'
<ingredients other than cheese>
cheese
burger patty
'bun top'

Very simple for me:
Top bun (toasted)
Lettuce (iceberg)
Mustard (French's yellow)
Meat (well done)
Bottom bun (toasted)

With all the other stuff some of you put on a burger, why bother with the meat? There's no way you can taste it.

Holy, shit, what is the matter with people.

Bun
onion
cheese (melted on the grill)
ground sirloin patty

anything else is just hazardous waste polluting burgers they way they were meant to be.

Just to keep marital peace, sautéed mushrooms are acceptable.

My apologies, yours is a simple recipe. For me, mayo is Kryptonite, so once I saw that, I moved on.

If you're eating a crappy burger, by all means slather on all kinds of condiments. With a good burger, just some fresh tomato and some onion.

Completely agree that simple is best. Sorry to hear about you and mayo. Started adding after watching an Alton Brown show (Feasting on Asphalt?).

A bit surprised at all the things folks are putting on burgers. My wife and I prefer to be able to actually taste the meat, hence the more simple approach. She doesn't put any mayo on hers. It's only a slice or two of onion. That's all.

I will, on occasion, when ordering out, have blue cheese and bacon, mainly because... bacon Wink
