Now that my son and d-i-l are at the new duty station in Europe, I need to find out the details of mail and shipping packages to them, and vice versa.

How long does it take? What cost? Any limits on what can be sent?

I wanted to ship some Tony’s clam chowder. Neither Tony nor Amazon would/could handle it.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Buy it, place in a sturdy box, place address and take it to the post office. Easy, really.

Yep. See it all the time. Should not be a problem.

you will pay the shipping to the APO address,

which is the same as shipping to a similar zipcode,

as in no international mail pricing,

get a scale,
use the online calculator at USPS and you can click and ship the labels, and just drop off,

shipping canned goods in a large or med flat rate box would probably be your best bang for the buck depending on how close you are to the APO location (mail wise,)

when a friend was in the sandbox, from RVA to his APO, 9 lbs was the magic number to make a Med flat rate box beneficial as far as cost (he got a 10 lb package about once a month)

IIRC you can only ship APO via USPS

Shipping a package to an APO is treated the same as if it were going to somewhere in the USA and the rates apply too.

My Dad used to ship me snacks and newspapers from home as part of care packages to Germany when I was in the Army, and I used to ship German goodies home to him.

Shipping from the U.S. to an APO in Europe means that piece of mail arrives at the APO (east coast) and travels via U.S. military transport to the U.S. military base, never leaving U.S. mil control - so there is no required customs form.

Being overseas, your lifeline is mail order - and you could possibly have a local mailing address to mail order items that will not usually ship to APO addresses. Those incoming items go through customs.

not really, the first run is usually the best test,

when I was mailing to Kuwait and Iraq, it was about 10-12 days IIRC,

2 days to the APO, the rest to the base mailbox
