NYPD's robot dogs are back after backlash. NYC Mayor Eric Adams says 'we cannot be afraid' of the technology.

The NYPD's robotic dogs are "out of the pound" again, mayor Eric Adams announced earlier this week.
The robots, known as "Digidogs," will be deployed to handle dangerous situations like bomb threats.
The announcement comes two years after the city stopped using the robots in response to backlash.
The New York Police Department's robotic dogs are once again "out of the pound," according to Mayor Eric Adams.

Adams announced during a press conference earlier this week that the city spent $750,000 on two robotic canines the NYPD calls "Digidogs. " The remote-controlled dogs can climb stairs with their four-legs and include cameras and microphones that can record live pictures and sound, according to CBS.

Mayor Adams — a former NYPD captain best known for his tough-on-crime policies — said the robot dogs will be deployed during life-threatening situations such as bomb threats and hostages, as well as during inspections of hazardous waste sites. He said the dogs can "save lives" in situations where "you can't have police officers going inside because it's dangerous."

Just don't try this in Philly... some years back, a certain robot travelled from the West Coast to the East Coast successfully, until it reached Philadelphia. The bot was stripped of some essential parts and looked like it had been gang raped when they found it.

AB 742 would prohibit police from using dogs to apprehend a suspect or for crowd control. Police dogs would not be allowed to bite people under any circumstances, according to the bill text. The bill does not prevent the use of search and rescue dogs or police K-9s that sniff out bombs or drugs.

"The use of police canines has been a mainstay in this country’s dehumanizing, cruel, and violent abuse of Black Americans and people of color for centuries," the bill reads, adding that police dogs were used by slave catchers and, more recently, to quell civil unrest like the Los Angeles race riots and Black Lives Matter protests.

Statistics from the California Department of Justice show no use-of-force injuries involving police dogs during civil disorder or assemblies in 2020 or 2021.
