The weather people had been talking for several days that central to southern Iowa would have a "slight risk" of severe weather today. That was updated yesterday to "enhanced risk." It was around 60 degrees today and extremely humid. The air was condensing at lower elevations. I was in the woods around 4pm and there is a valley 80 feet lower than the surrounding terrain and I was watching the fog develop before my eyes where it was at least 10 degrees cooler and I could see my breath. I'd never seen anything like that before. We had a couple of thunderstorms go through, one overnight last night, one around 2pm but the weather people kept talking about 5pm still and each storm front really didn't change the temperature. South of Winterset, IA (Bridges of Madison County / John Wayne Birthplace) had 4 adults and 2 children die in a likely EF3 tornado. Pictures show well built homes completely swept off their foundation. The tornado(es) went to the south and east of the Des Moines area and caused all sorts of damage in the suburbs of Norwalk and Pleasant Hill but no fatalities reported there. This is all about 15 miles from of us, no damage to our house and just some brief pea sized hail. Total tornado(es) path was about 160 miles across Iowa. And they are forecasting snow tomorrow...

I live near Davenport, all the sirens were going off about 9PM last night but thankfully all we got was heavy rain and strong winds. There were some power outages. The local TV weather people were all over it; a tornado may have formed in a rural area but I have not heard of any damage. Sad news, it's up to seven deaths, that may rise further. https://www.kcrg.com/2022/03/0...re-weather-outbreak/

My first teaching job was in Winterset. From the pictures on the news and what friends are posting, the devastation is much worse than initially thought. ___________________________ "Those that can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others..."

There was also some major property damage done in Vinton, Iowa from another possible tornado. NOAA is still reviewing information to determine if tornado or just straight line wind. Fortunately no injuries were reported as of noon news cast.
