The low bridge, internet famous for videos of trucks crashing into it is being raised. It will still be a somewhat low bridge however so some crashes may continue.

Crashes.

The city next to me has a truck-eating railroad bridge, but a fix appears unlikely as neither the railroad nor the city of Davenport will pay for it.

Saw that video on their channel today.

I can't remember, Which SF member was involved with the design / install of the beam in front of the bridge?

Why raise the bridge? Seems like lowering the road would be easier

Forgot about this. I'd tried to post a thread about it but got thrown into moderated limbo due to a trigger word.

I know better than to ask you to repeat it, but part of me is WAY curious what word related to a discussion about a bridge would be a trigger word. Big Grin

No. Say it’s not so! With the deterioration of road conditions across the state of NC, I don’t understand. Why change this when there is ample warning of the conditions ahead. Drivers should be well aware by now.

There are a bunch of utilities beneath the roadway. I think a main sewer or something.

Many box trucks and semi sleepers are 12’2”. Raising this bridge to 12’4” will save a lot of property damage.

I am surprised you can find a rental truck in the area with a roof on the box. And that protective beam is pretty impressive - simple and effective.

Rain, if you lower the road then you now create a large low spot for water to collect. It may cost a lot more to install storm drains than to raise the bridge.

Imagine what a "No Trucks over 1 ton" sign would have done for them.

What does the bridge carry? If it were a railroad bridge, wouldn't raising it disturb the grade of the tracks?

It's a RR bridge.

More details here:
News & Observer

quote:
The N.C. Railroad, which owns the rail line, will use jacks to carefully lift the steel beams that carry the tracks over the street, then slide new plates between the beams and concrete piers, said Jim Kessler, the railroad’s vice president of engineering. At the same time, crews from Norfolk Southern, which leases the rail line, will raise the tracks on both sides of the bridge, creating a gradual eight-inch change in grade.
