I've been using a Nokia Lumia 635 running Windows 8.1 for a few years now. I'm with AT&T U-verse and mobile. I'm perfectly happy with the phone; it does everything I need and much more. It crapped out today; I think it's the battery. I assume I can get a new battery. Is there any reason I can't just get a new battery and go on using my (outdated and discontinued) phone and operating system? Is it kind of like running Windows 7 on my computer? I'm happy with that and it works. Is the phone a similar situation? If it turns out that the phone doesn't work, can I get a new one and keep using that old-style phone and system? I don't need to or want to switch to something else; this was a $50 phone and I like it. TIA.

There are batteries available online (Ebay, Amazon, etc) for cheap.
I don't know how easy it is to get them apart to install though, had a Lumina 620 a while back and seemed like it was glued together and not fun to take apart.
You might find a cell phone shop that can do it for you cheap enough.
Duck before the masses flame you for still using a Windows Phone.
It is dying albeit not dead.
Actually a pretty good phone if you don't need a ton of little apps.
Good Luck.

That's my contention and has been since I got it.
Thanks for reply.

Yeah, I've had it apart. I'm just trying to figure out if I can keep using this dinosaur indefinitely. Thanks for the link.

No. Buy an Android or Apple. Navigate a buddy's phone of both varieties and see which feels more natural to you. For me it's Android because I enjoy the flexibility of it and don't like the cookie cutter Apple interface.

Windows phones are a dying breed. No point reinvesting in antiquated tech.

I don't care if it's antiquated. I only make calls and texts and very little else. Is there any reason it won't continue to do that?

I don't think AT&T has added any new bands in a few years, so, if you're satisfied with the device, until 5G becomes a reality I don't see any reason to spend a wad of money on a new one.

It's only "antiquated" because of the lack of app support.
It does everything else as good as any Apple or Android.
Plus the battery is cheap - under $10 on Amazon.

No, no, no. It's antiquated because it's more than a couple years old. None of the rest of that matters.

It's more than a couple years old. It's antiquated. It must be replaced with something else that will be antiquated when it, too, gets to be more than a couple years old.

Sheesh.

My grandfather still has a working BetaMax player, I bought him a flat screen TV at least. Too each their own. I wouldn't buy the battery unless I was 100% sure it was the problem. I absolutely hated my Lumia, but I used it for work so functionality was important for me. Awesome camera though.

Ok. That's the answer I was looking for; I can keep using it if I can make it work. Great. And, by the way, Skins, the camera is one other feature I do use, and it works fine. Thanks, all, for the replies.

I am puzzled by the suggestions that amals should buy a new phone. If he does not need anything but calls and texts, and the battery on the current phone can be replaced for ten bucks, why not keep it going as long as possible?

Fix it and keep going. Same thing with cars. It does what you need. It’s cheap to fix? Fix it.
Until they phase out all the old bands, as long as you can make calls or text, why spend more money on something you will never use.

^^^^ and V-Tail, my thoughts exactly. Now I understand the issue. When they stop providing 4G, we'll all have to get new phones. Till then, batteries on order and my 635 and I can remain pals.
