I have my ears open on Christmas present purchases.
My Son indicated to me that he is looking for a high output flashlight to search his 12 acre property for his 2 GSD at night.
It sounds like he wants a hand held, not a pocket or everyday carry type of light.
I don't want to spend a fortune on this but want something that will work and be reliable.

Any suggestions or advice on this type of purchase?

This Fenix PD36R Pro 2800 Lumen flashlight has a lot of good reviews.
It has a deal right now that includes an EE E03R V2 Keychain Light.

Fenix lights. 3000 lumens around the $100 mark. 6000 lumens around $200. 18,000 lumens is $450.

The one above that minnow just recommended is what I asked Santa for this year.

I have the previous version of this: https://www.streamlight.com/pr...s/detail/protac-hl-6
Advertised as 5300 Lumens on Hi.
My light is labeled as Protac HL 5x.
It's a really good flashlight. Blindingly bright!
It lights up deer "eyeballs" at 450 yards in the cut cornfield across the street from my house.
Zero complaints with this model.

I have a HL 5x that I used extensively at work back when I was on nights. That thing is brighter than the LED spotlight that I had on my old squad, with better throw. On days now, and it doesn't see as much use but I do keep it in the car because my new squad doesn't have a spotlight. I've had no reliability problems with it, either...it's a great light. The only thing that's a little annoying is that you have to pull the batteries out to charge them...it doesn't have a dock like the stinger or the Strion. But that's really just me being spoiled.

As long as he's wanting a big handheld, the HL-6 is a great light. It's definitely too big for EDC or pocket carry, though. I won't even wear it on a duty belt, although I know a few guys who do.

I find that my Olight LEP (Laser Excited Phosphor) light is the nuts for picking out critters in the woods. Model L52804646 "Odin Turbo." My particular model is intended as a weapons light with a picatinny rail, but works just fine in the hand. About $120.

I have the LR40R and it’s bright. About as big as I’d like to carry and use.

Yeah,I've got one. Feels solid, really bright. The 27100 battery has greater capacity than the 18650 battery, for longer runtime. No separate charger needed, just a USB-C cable and you can charge the battery while it's installed in the light. Buy a spare 27100 when you buy the light.

Costco has a 7000 lumen flashlight on sale right now. I bought one for Christmas, just casually playing around with it, it seems well made. Whether it is really 7k may be debatable but it can either use its rechargeable lithium ion battery or standard batteries. It also acts as a battery pack with the rechargeable one.

Another Fenix recommendation.
I use a Fenix WF26R Rechargeable when I need more light then my EDC carry Fenix.

I’ve got the LR50R by Fenix. It’ll light up my property and the neighbors’ property 300 yards away.

Only drawback to them is they can get rather hot.

Fair enough and prudent. But Costco doesn’t sell junk in my experience. Now if it was Freddy’s Tactical Gear and Bagels selling it at a gun show next to the jerky and aroma therapy booths, I’d run away fast.

First identify whether he wants a bright light, or if he actually needs a throwy light. I've got some pretty bright lights that are terrible if you're trying to look at anything more than a few dozen feet away. A light that's uncomfortably bright in your living room might come up short on 12 acres. How far does he need to see?

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

When he is looking for his Dogs, as far as possible.
This flashlight would be for long distance only.

I have been using the Fenix PD36R for a long time as my duty flashlight. It's great, especially outside, outside in the woods, etc.

This is what I have to search the woods at night, I got one for my daughter for when she takes her dog out and one for my son and barrel racing DIL for when they go to the barn. Big and blocky but it sure throws a beam.
