PSA for Drone Pilots: FAA changes regs, now require exterior drone markings Login/Join

PSA

We hobbyists and pilots have to mark our drone exteriors with our FAA numbers.
This new interim rule went into effect February 25.

I marked mine in a hokey temporary fashion until my more professional looking labels are ready.

There doesn't seem to be a size requirement, only that it is visible in person up close and personal.
I'm going small with 3/16 inch lettering on one side.

I always had my numbers in the battery compartment. After this announcement I just pulled the label and restuck it on the exterior. They claim it’s mostly for first responders which is kinda goofy because if you were up to no good with it you would either not have a number on there or put a fake one. Just hysteria control.

I'm not particularly against it, but it does affect aesthetics.

The article says we may get to fly at night in the future, perhaps.

As long as we are integrated properly, these things might be good.
Emphasis on the word "properly", as opposed to hatred of drones and wanting to regulate them out of existence.

I'm going to have the # as well as address engraved on the drone we just bought for a school trip, especially since we're taking it international and it needs to have such info on it, according to Icelandic drone laws.

I'm thinking we can easily get it to fit on one of the rotor arms on the Mavic Pro. Also makes it not look like it's covered in stickers.

I wouldn’t engrave it just in case you ever want to sell it in the future. A label maker does just fine, it’s just one small sticker. In your case I guess two small stickers.

I have my Part 107 so my drone has required labeling from the get-go...

but does the FAA now require that drones be registered? I remember doing the $5 registration thing, but it wasn't mandatory at the time...

I was required to get the hobbyist license.
Apparently, the number I received covers all my aircraft. I am assuming that meant drones owned as well.

Does anyone know for sure?

How do they enforce this? Smile
If the drone police pull over your drone, Wink it won't have any markings on it, so they won't know who's not marking their drone? Razz

Slippery slope ahead.... next you'll be standing in line at the DDV (Department of Drone Vehicles), new plates, registration, yearly state inspection.

Yes it does. The number registers you.

This is the way it was worded when the registration first begin. The only change is now the number is required to be on the exterior.

The FAA has just announced that all small unmanned aircraft operators (read: model planes pilots) must register with the FAA by February 19th to avoid a $5 registration fee. The registration is good for three years, and you will be given a unique identification number that you need to place in/on all of your aircraft.

At 0330 they use an M1A Abrams to blow your front door down and kill your parakeet, only to discover the address was 258 S. Maple St. and you live at 852 N. Maple St., three zip codes over.

Seems like overkill, bit it ensures you'll know to have a number on your drone!

Yes only one for all your drones,if you are a hobbyist and not fly it for Commercial putting video on YouTube is considered commercial since you can get paid if you get a lot of hits.

107 deals with commercial activity and every drone you own needs a separate registration number.

Drone isn't mine, it's owned by the school, so they'll never sell it. Smile

A LEO can ask you to land to inspect your numbers and if they are not visible then you get a ticket. I’m not sure how many departments inform their LEO’s of this but if money is involved it might be more and more.

That’s how the original registration worked but that is no longer true. If you have your 107 each and every drone has to have its own number just like any aircraft. The jury is still out on hobbyist but it seems like for them it might be one and done.

5.5lbs would eliminate most drone registration. The weight requirement for registering a drone is between .55 lbs. (250 grams) and 55 lbs. (25 kg).

You don’t really know that. If the school scraps the program in two years it would be nice to easily sell it. I guess I just don’t get why the need to limit yourself.

I believe this is correct even though the FAA has been very vague on the subject.

The labels with my numbers arrived today and I put them on.

They don't look as bad on the drone as I had thought they might.
In fact, I'm kind of liking them.
They somehow give it that "official" look.
