Womens Flat track derby. (WFTDA) differs quite a bit from the traveling show that the 50-70's put on.

1 There are specific areas that can be hit.

2 There are rule sets as to points and fouls.

3 The strategy is layered, lapping is one part, blocking is another, passing and point spread round it out.

4 These ladies train, and train, and train. My wifes league Mother State Roller Derby. MSRD practices from 10 to 12 hours a week. Then they double down with strength and conditioning training. Topping out at about 15-20 hours a week for the A team members. Beginners, work on passing an exhaustive set of skills requirements while being taught the basics rules of the sport. B team members are introduced into the rotation and learn the strategy.

What I am most amazed at is how a small regional league(S) (Portland and Texas) have built this into the fastest growing female sport. With well over 250 leagues most having an A,B,C team. This truely is their sport, they got is,they run it, they manage it. They are proud of it. Come watch, Or at the very least check out one of the WFTDA Bouts on youtube

Rhino, I'll take this opportunity to tell you and everyone else here- when a man mentions his wife, you mind. your. manners.

This should require no explanation.

Fair warning to all. SIGforum is like La Cosa Nostra- wives are absolutely and entirely off-limits. No jokes. Be respectful or be quiet.

Love roller derby. (a former girlfriend used to complete).

When I was a kid I used to listen to Jim Croce's version over-and-over again.

My wife loved that! Thank you.

It is looking to be a fun bout this weekend. I will be there helping out doing the scoreboard. My kids will be there cheering my MSRD on. (well texting and ignoring society at the least)

I had no idea the sport was current and modernized, or about flat track.

It is, there is also an after party, and the following Sunday is an open invitation for new interested players. So if anyone has a local spouse, lady friend that is interested.

Sorry for the delay. Ther were about 600 shots theat my son took of the game. It was his first time using a SLR camera.

Here are a few highlights.

The after game shot.

Each team, plus the ref's do a set of warm ups.

Usually the leagues have members choose some sobriquet. Charm City has some inventive ones, MSRD chooses not to.

The line up at the begining of the bout. Where the annaouncers calls out their league registered number, and Sobriquiet if they have one.

Charm city

MSRD

On the left is Casey, she has about 12 years of derby, My wife just to the right, Leah, 2nd from the left, and Rachel on the right. Notably in the back is another NSO (non scoring official) Kaiya, She was incharge of keeping the track taped properly. The track is a line of twine covered in tape. It allows leagues to hold bouts on just about any smooth surface. With how these ladies tear shit up, Having a competent track manager is key to keep the bout going. I have watched bouts where they have to stop regularly to fix things up. This is my 4th one with MSRD. Kaiya keeps it rolling along. Thanks

Number 11 is Courtney, the coach can be seen in the suit. There are rules for what the coaches can dress like, and how they can act. He always goes to the 9's.

The first Jam. A jam is rated on two things. a 2 minute timer, or when the lead jammer calls it off. The leagues (teams) line up on the jam line and pivot line. (jammers on jam line, everyone else on pivot). Whistle is blown, first jammer out of the Pack becomes lead jammer. They have the ability to call off the jam, starting new jam. This photo shos the line up just after whistle.

The ladies with the Stars on the helmet are the jammers. The ladies with the stripe are the pivots. Jammers are the only ones that can score points. They do so after completing their first lap around the track. On the second lap, one point is awarded for every hip they pass of the opposing team (5 max currently).

Here you can see number 13 MSRD just passing blocker 1991. Tameka number 7 MSRD is blockign the PIvot (purple shorts) from acting as offense for charm city, their jammer can be seen behind number 11

Number 13 (nicky) cleared the pack and is awarded lead jammer status. This allows her to call off the jam if she wants. Reasons to do so would be to keep the opposing team from scoring after their first lap around.

There is alot going on in this photo. So i will start left to right.

Left, Casey from MSRD is blocking purple short pivot. Purple shorts has something in her hand. That would be the second function of a pivot. Typically they are the back up defense against an opposing jammer, and offense for your own jammer. The final thing they can do is become the jammer. This is done via "star pass" what she has in her hand is the star from the red helmeted lady just to her right. Tameeka, kept the charm city jammer penned up. She ripped off her star and passed it to her pivot who was past the scrum (pack of boddies). That pivot then has to travel all the way around 1 time before she can score.
The star pass, is also more commonly called a panty pass.

Here is 28, purple shorts putting on the star.

You will see this blocking set up quite a bit. The three ladies will link arms and skate in unison to form a blocking wall. Good blocking teams will do it while spinning. Thus always putting a new set of hips to the jammer being blocked. It is called a tripod block.

There are several ways for a jammer to get through a tripod or quad wall. One is to juke left and right around members of a wall, another is to drive through the wall. You can see the charm city jammer atempting that here.

You can also see the pivot just ahead of the wall. Ready for the star pass.

Here is a thrid example. Simply be to fast, nimble and 3 times as strong as they think you are. Rachael (msrd jammer this jam)is hell on wheels. She ducked under and through their formation, then ran passed.

This is the beginnings of a very painful hit. Casey (32 and Nicky 13) are set up to block 262 who just recieved a star pass. Casey is low, her shoulder is below the 262 jammer. she is using nicky as a stop brace while she lunges sideways and up. IIRC 262 bounced a couple of times.

Here you can see 262 was bounced out of bounds and is heading back behind the last person her hips were behind to re enter the track.

Rachel, being Little miss badass.

This motion, the tapping of both hands to your hips by a lead jammer calls off the jam. It is usually done to keep the other jammer from scoring points. In an official sanctioned game for your leagues ranking. it depends on more than just that. The point spred between the two teams is calculated based on their ranking. So, figuring weather or not to go for more points, or let the opposing team get a bit closer makes a difference in the national and internation rankings.

Casey 32, doing her thing again. Bouncing purple star out of the track.
the set up

Just after the hip check, now the jammer is off balance and her weight will carry her out of bounds.

She tries for a hop/jump step to stay in.

She did go out of bounds, but the only hip infront of her (32 had moved behind before she went out was 2) she re entered just behind number 2. Had she not, it would have been a penalty and 30 seconds in the penalty box.

There are 500 ish photos. I pretty much covered the basics of a jam, blocking, star pass, and your basic out of bounds stuff. You can see all the photos here if you have a facebook account.

No mercy rule? I don’t know anything about the sport but that seems to be a monumental butt whipping.

This was a rescheduled game from the earlier in the year. It was no longer league sanctioned for scoring. Charm city brought 4 "a" team (all star shirts) and 3 or 4 b team members. Their roster was opened up to other ladies from other leagues to join for the game.

They face MSRD'S A team plus two alternates.

Both teams are great, but adding in the b team members and other league players effected their overall ability to control defense of msrd jammers.
