It would seem that they'd be nearly simultaneous.

Hmmm...

Maybe something big and heavy (and slower) like slugs?

Snaps/cracks and buzzing are what I recall. No "whooshes".

Did the bullets perhaps have to travel through an intermediate barrier? For example, that "whoosh" could be it rustling leaves in the branches of an intervening tree, or similar.

That could be as I'm surrounded by a Ponderosa pine forest. It would be remarkable though if a projectile could make it through all that without hitting a branch or trunk.

Same, after a couple experiences.

I have been shot at directly once. But it was through a front door, and while I heard the rounds going off, the glass shattering was the noise I most distinctly remember. I have also been in the area while riccocheting rounds were tumbling in my vicinity. Obviously, that is a unique sound that you can probably imagine if you haven't heard it first hand.

Being shot at is never fun! Most of the experiences here echo my own: far away, hear the bees then the bang. Close up: hear the bang only! Depending on the situation (war, hunting, domestic), it can cause different bodily reactions.

The whoosh sounds to me like some kind of exploding projectile. I have a WWII flare pistol that shoots simulated artillery shells; at a 45 degree angle it will launch the round about 80 yards which will then explode about 30ft off the ground... think half a stick of dynamite.

During the holidays at my Dad's house in the country I was hearing rifle shots from the neighbors house about a quarter mile away. No big deal as this was fairly normal and they fire the opposite direction into the woods. I happen to be standing under the carport when I hear a shot and a 1/2 second later a very loud boom magnified by the carport. Scared the hell out of me thinking the round was in my direction until it hit me that they were shooting tannerite.

We were flying model airplanes by the landfill and we saw tracers and what sounded and felt like firecrackers, then later the sound of a small caliber automatic weapon. The bullets actually stung, whizzing many yards by.

A knothead down in the sheriff's shooting pit at the landfill was firing an full auto MP5 at our airplanes.

I hurriedly landed my plane and got under the car while he was still shooting at my brother in law's plane still flying.

The sonofabitch came up out of the pit laughing at us after I called 911 and the call got transferred to the shithead doing the shooting. This fucker laughed at us for getting bent out of shape over it. It was the one time I had ever seen my brother in law come unhinged.

The deputy would later shoot a kid and put a knife in his hand on dash cam.

Did you check your house for possible bullet holes? Notify the local police?

I took a report from a kayaker a couple of months ago who told me that these guys on a hill above him were shooting very close to him, knowing that he was there on the small river. He had been confronted by the property owner that the area was private, so he knew they were trying to scare him. Here in Texas, that is Deadly Conduct.
