I just learned that the ATF / Feds no longer recognizes the possession of a valid Michigan CPL for purposes of proof of a clear background check. This is apparently due to Michigan legalizing pot and now pot users can possess CPLs. And the Feds still consider pot illegal. One of the main reasons for my getting a CPL was to be able to skip the whole pointless background check nonsense. I am certainly glad that everyone can smoke pot without a background check! Every gun I have bought in Michigan has run a NICS check even with me being a CPL holder since 2001. Most gun shops do a NICS check on all purchases for CPL holders. Nothing is changing for me. _________________________ Einstein defines insanity as "Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results"

^^^^ I bought a pistol last summer. Offered to show the clerk my CPL but he was not interested and couldn't care less. Did a full-on NICS check. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Mark in Michigan, Best regards, Mark in Michigan

My experience are different than yours. Unless they are running checks and not telling me. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

I saw this elsewhere a while back. I'm curious about you guys that are having NICS run despite having a CPL. Did you inform them that's not how it works? Only time since getting my CPL they've run a NICS for me was when my CPL expired without me knowing as they sent the renewal to my old address.

I can sympathize, but having been on the other side of the counter at gunshows and seen a full on ATF audit of my buddy's one man shop and 4473s, I can understand extra caution on dealers' parts. It's their license and their ass on the line. Things as petty as one agent telling you the form has to be done in blue ink and a year later another guy saying it has to be black ink. It's been a while since I bought my last handgun, but when I did even with my cpl, they still did the background check. What the MI cpl did which was really nice was allowed one to avoid having to stop by the appropriate county law enforcement office to pick up a purchase permit, handle the paperwork yourself, and no longer had to bring the gun back in to be 'inspected'. ------------- $

I've had a MI CPL since MI became a shall issue state in ~2001. From what I can remember when buying a gun at any dealer, they always ran a NICS check. I see this as a non problem. ____________________________ NRA Life Member, Annual Member GOA, MGO Annual Member

Was at the local shop. He had printed handouts telling why this was being done. Thing is last couple I bought he ran the guns through.
