When we go on vacation, I shut off the main in the basement. When we leave our place in Alabama, I throw the breaker to the electric on-demand water heater and shut the water off at the well.

When we leave on vacation: Water main off, well breaker off, drain pipes down to basement sink. Add a splash of bleach to toilets and traps.
